๐ 5/13/2026 ๐ After 11 years of dedicated service at APSU, Prof. Barry Bruster has announced his retirement. ๐๐
Today we come together with gratitude and celebration to honor the remarkable journey of Mr. Barry G. Bruster as he concludes an outstanding chapter at Austin Peay State University and begins a well earned retirement. After 11 years of dedicated service to APSU, and following a distinguished career in the United States Navy, Mr. Bruster leaves behind a legacy defined by commitment, integrity, and genuine care for others.
Choosing to retire was not an easy decision for Mr. Bruster. His deep affection for teaching, his students, and the Department of Computer Science & Information Technology has been evident from the very beginning. He approached every responsibility with enthusiasm and always sought what was best for our programs. At this point in life, however, he has thoughtfully chosen to focus on what matters most, his family, marking a meaningful and admirable transition.
Mr. Bruster joined APSU in the fall of 2015 as an instructor and quickly proved himself to be an exceptional asset to the faculty. His dedication was unwavering; he routinely went above and beyond, approaching every task with energy and professionalism. He welcomed every teaching assignment with a positive spirit, whether guiding students through challenging introductory programming courses or sharing his passion and expertise in advanced cybersecurity classes whenever the opportunity arose.
Beyond the classroom, Mr. Brusterโs contributions were both visible and lasting. He generously volunteered his time to curate and maintain the computing museum in the Maynard Math & Computer Science Building lobby. The displays that spark curiosity, nostalgia, and admiration from visitors are a testament to his care, knowledge, and attention to detail.
Mr. Bruster also brought a strong commitment to scholarship and collaboration. He played an integral role in supporting and promoting the National Social Science Association (NSSA) conferences year after year and actively participated in conference presentations and research initiatives. Through collaborations with fellow faculty, he contributed to the publication of multiple refereed research papers, strengthening the departmentโs academic presence.
One of Mr. Brusterโs most enduring accomplishments at APSU was his role in helping establish cybersecurity concentrations within the B.S., M.S., and P.S.M. programs. Working alongside the now retired Dr. Joseph Elarde and later Dr. Mir Hasan, Mr. Bruster helped lay the groundwork for what has become one of the departmentโs most popular and successful areas of study. His contagious enthusiasm inspired colleagues and students alike, leaving a lasting impression on hundreds of graduates and countless current students.
Austin Peay State University has been truly fortunate to benefit from Mr. Brusterโs service, expertise, and generosity of spirit. As he steps into the next phase of his life, we offer our deepest appreciation for all he has given and our warmest wishes for happiness, fulfillment, and cherished time with his family. His impact will be felt for years to come.
