Tips for utilizing spices. (EatRight.org) Understanding how to optimize taste or flavor as well as decrease fat, sugar and sodium in various recipes can be difficult but not if you know how to use spices. Most popular/common spices and herbs include - black pepper, cayenne pepper, oregano, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, bay leaf, curry powder, thyme, paprika, nutmeg, turmeric, clove, cinnamon, chili powder, and herb or spice seasoning blends. Spices can be used as a base in soups, stews, sauces and stir-fry dishes. Substitute dried herbs for 3 parts fresh herbs. Store in air tight containers to optimize shelf life. Lastly, taste and flavor your recipe throughout the cooking process to not over or under season dishes! (Add salt at the end because the recipe may not need salt - depending on the food and spices or herbs used) reference: https://www.eatright.org/food/planning-and-prep/cooking-tips-and-trends/get-to-know-your-spice-rack

National root vegetables 🧄🥕🍠 & exotic fruits 🍍🥝🍈 month! Let’s get to the root of the matter: root veggies are great in winter recipes because they are the types of vegetables that grow under the ground and the main parts that are edible grows within the earth. Root vegetables are high in fiber, are affordable, and consist of diverse colors that add many health benefits. Common root vegetables include carrots, sweet potato, yams, garlic, potato, beets, turnip, rutabaga, and radishes. Let’s get exotic in our taste buds: exotic fruits are the type of fruits that are unusual because of their different textures and limited availability. Most of these fruits can be purchased fresh or in preserved form. Some exotic fruits come canned and/or processed because it makes them soft and easier to chew. Exotic fruits contain vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy body. Exotic fruits include mangoes, dates, rambutan, jackfruit, durian, dragon fruit, carambola, kiwano, kiwi, cucamelon, pomelo, passion fruit and fingered citron.
