Welcome Home Mr. President

Hubert Humphrey was a former vice-president of the United States. When he died hundreds of people from across the world attended his funeral. All were welcome, but one – former President Richard Nixon, who had not long previously dragged himself and his country through the humiliation and shame of Watergate. As eyes turned away and conversations ran dry around him Nixon could feel the ostracism being ladled out to him.

Then Jimmy Carter, the serving US President, walked into the room. Carter was from a different political party to Nixon and well known for his honesty and integrity. As he moved to his seat President Carter noticed Richard Nixon standing all alone. Carter immediately changed course, walked over to Richard Nixon, held out his hand, and smiling genuinely and broadly embraced Nixon and said “Welcome home, Mr. President! Welcome home!”

The incident was reported by Newsweek magazine, which wrote: “If there was a turning point in Nixon’s long ordeal in the wilderness, it was that moment and that gesture of love and compassion.”

Who do we know that could use a friendly smile and a warm handshake?

Experienced athletes know the feeling all too well. Marathon runners experience it at about the twenty-mile mark. Cyclists meet it while riding hard into a headwind. Mountain climbers encounter it about two-thirds of the way into a long ascent to the summit. The feeling is the same: you and I feel as though we have run full-speed right into a wall.

"Hitting the Wall" hurts. The simplest tasks become arduous, sustained focus is impossible, and defeat seems imminent.

Athletes are not the only ones who know how it feels. Moses could readily testify to the pain and discouragement of hitting life's walls. Simply waking up in the morning becomes a chore, and work morphs into a life draining experience.

We begin to wonder whether or not we can go on. Can I be the adult that my family deserves? Can I be the spouse that I want to be? Can I fulfill my responsibilities at church and in my community?

Do you know what it is like to "hit the wall"? Maybe you are staring at that wall right now! If so, take comfort knowing you are not alone. Like you and I, like Moses, generations of God's people have run up against walls of all kinds.

How thankful we can be that God has a promise for us when we hit the wall.

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." - Isaiah 40:31

For those times in life when a storm blows in...

Sometimes the Lord calms the storm;
Sometimes He lets the storm rage and calms His child.

Several years ago a preacher moved to town. Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to downtown. When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidently given him a quarter too much change.

As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, you better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it. Then he thought, "Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount? Anyway the bus company already gets too much fare; they will never miss it. Accept it as a gift from God and keep quiet."

When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, then he handed the quarter to the driver and said, "Here, you gave me too much change."

The driver with a smile, replied, "Aren't you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking lately about going to worship somewhere. I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change."

When the preacher stepped off the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole and held on, and said, "Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter."

The ancient city of Troy had only one gate. You could go round and round the city walls but you would not find another gate into the city. If you wanted to enter the city of Troy, there was only one way, one gate, one door.

To enter the golden city of Heaven there is only one way, one gate, one door.

Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

In John 10:1-2, Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep."

To enter the portals of Heaven you must enter by the Door, and that Door is Jesus.

An invitation has been extended to all, "And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." Rev. 22:17

"We are never nearer Christ than when we find ourselves lost in a holy amazement at His unspeakable love." John Owen

If you were ever in doubt, God loves you!

For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. - John 3:16

The Duke of Wellington, the British military leader who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, was not an easy man to serve under. He was brilliant, demanding, and not one to shower his subordinates with compliments. Yet even Wellington realized that his methods left something to be desired.

In his old age a young lady asked him what, if anything, he would do differently if he had his life to live over again. Wellington thought for a moment, then replied. "I'd give more praise," he said.

"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching." Hebrews 10:24-25

Who can you praise today? Be an encouragement to others!
