Marek Urban and his team have known a new type of material they created at Clemson University can story energy. But now they have now found a new potential use–parallel computing. If further developed, the material could help create new types of computers that can handle more complex information and make better decisions than traditional computers.

Please help us congratulate David Madukwe! He recently took first-place in the Society For Biomaterials' 3-Minute Thesis competition for his presentation, "Elastin Nano-Robot Therapy to Reverse Aneurysms." Madukwe is a Ph.D. student in the lab of Narendra Vyavahare, the Hunter Endowed Chair in the Clemson Bioengineering.

This graphical abstract of new research was featured on the back cover of the journal Advanced Optical Materials. The research team included four co-authors from Clemson University's Holcombe Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Judson Ryckman, Tomoshree Dash, Saddam Gafsi and Estevao Marques Dos Santos. One co-author, Ivan Kravchenko, was from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Aspiring engineers at Tri-County Technical College will have a new pathway into Clemson University through STEPS2Clemson. The program offers up to $10,000 in scholarship support during students’ first year, which is completed at Tri-County. After transferring to Clemson, students are eligible for up to $15,000 per year for up to three years, contingent on maintaining academic progress.

Congratulations to all of this year's Goldwater Scholars! You are among the best of the best undergraduate STEM students in the country. The scholars are:

Ashley Blake — Chemical Engineering (Biomolecular Engineering concentration)

Andrew Hodges — Physics; minor in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Science

Meridee Ritzer — Chemistry; minors in Geology and Nuclear Engineering

Honors students Ashley Blake, Drew Hodges and National Scholar Meridee Ritzer have been named 2026 Goldwater Scholars!

The award recognizes undergraduate students with strong potential for research careers in STEM. Their work includes nanomedicine and drug delivery, atmospheric and space physics, and chemistry focused on environmental applications, all fields with meaningful, real-world impact.

As emerging research leaders, they are helping move research at Clemson Fiercely Forward.

Twenty-one mentors have connected with 20 students in the Clemson University School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences. Civil engineering alumnus Tom Rochester (right), for example, is helping two students Jemal Scarborough (left) and Katie Nunnelley navigate their junior years and begin to prepare for their careers.

Please help us congratulate Martine LaBerge! She has received the Founder's Award from the Society for Biomaterials. The award recognizes long-term, landmark contributions to the field of biomaterials, along with sustained service to the society. LaBerge served as chair of Clemson Bioengineering for two decades, helping guide its growth into a nationally recognized program known for translational research, industry engagement and workforce development.
