Resilient Urban Design + Historic Preservation

Having celebrated its 100th year of architectural education in 2013, Clemson University School of Architecture strives to develop leaders who will shape architecture and the built environment of the 21st century for a better future. At its main campus in Clemson, SC, and in three satellite studio centers in Charleston SC, Barcelona, and Genoa, the school offers coursework leading to the Bachelor o

f Arts in Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Master of Science in Architecture. Graduate degrees are offered to those without prior undergraduate studies in architecture. In addition to full-time off-campus study at our "Fluid Campus" centers in Charleston, Barcelona, and Genoa, the school offers students opportunities to focus in Architecture + Health, Architecture + CommunityBuild (our unique design-build program), and studies in digital technologies. Faculty research areas also include sustainable and low-energy design, architectural robotics, smart materials, architectural history and theory, contemporary urbanism, and other areas related to our affiliation with Clemson's multidisciplinary PhD in Planning, Design, and the Built Environment (PDBE).

Students in ARCH 2520 reimagined the future of the Newtown Community Arts Center, developing design proposals that explore new opportunities for community gathering, cultural exchange and public engagement in Greenville’s historic Newtown neighborhood.

Working on the site of the current Mountain View Baptist Church, students examined how architecture can support and strengthen community connections. Their projects considered relationships between the site, the Swamp Rabbit Trail and Greenville’s West End arts district.

Throughout the semester, students engaged with community members, guest reviewers and design professionals in conversations about architecture, culture and civic responsibility.

Fourteen projects were selected as finalists and presented to community members and invited jurors during the ARCH 2520 Design Competition, sponsored by South Carolina NOMA.

This year, the students in the Inclusive Design Elective, taught by Clarissa Mendez, designed board games that question the use of AI in education and practice.

Escape Studio (pink and blue board game) was designed by Allison Sudlow, Carolina Micames, and Keven Estrella.
Studio: AI (brown cards) was designed by London Forsberg, MJ Ripley and Valentina Moran.

The students launched the games on Wednesday, April 29th. The event was attended by many students and by Professors Berrin Terim and Chloe Voltaire.

The class would like to acknowledge game designer Victoria Banks, RCID Clemson, for her feedback on earlier versions of the games. These board games will soon be handed to Gunnin Library so that they can be checked out in the future.

Architecture Student Spotlight: Mason Chizhik

Recently graduated architecture student, Mason Chizhik showcases his fun filled life as a college student at Clemson University. In Mason’s final year as a student, he was assigned to help refurbish Clemson University’s historic commencement lectern podium earlier this year, he helped preserve a meaningful piece of Clemson history. Seen at all the graduation ceremonies across campus, the podium was originally crafted more than 15 years ago by students in a Creative Inquiry course led by art faculty member Joey Manson as a challenge to create something that would outlast their time at Clemson.

As part of the restoration, plaques were placed inside the podium to recognize the students who helped build it and preserve its legacy for future generations.

The project also reflects the impact of Clemson’s hands-on learning experiences and Mason’s leadership through the Clemson Design Build Club, where he helped train students on equipment, tools and shop safety while growing his own leadership, communication and practical making abilities.

See the Tiger Newspaper to discover more about Mason’s work with the podium. Also, be on the look out for an article and images spotlighting the podium in the upcoming Clemson World magazine.

Students in the Architecture and Food elective wrapped up the semester by presenting imaginative design projects that tackled real-world food-related challenges through small-scale infrastructure interventions, gaining hands-on experience applying design thinking to practical issues.

To close out the class, they created and shared a one of a kind “Futurist Banquet” inspired by the 1932 Futurist Cookbook art manifesto. The course was taught by Andreea Mihalache, Associate Professor of Architecture and Co-Director of Architecture Graduate Programs.

Last Friday, the Richard A. McMahan School of Architecture hosted its annual Fourth Year Awards & Reception to celebrate soon-to-be graduates and their incredible accomplishments! 🎓

We were honored to welcome two external juries to campus to award the ASLA Prizes and the 4th Year Design Prize. In total, 72 students from Architecture and Landscape Architecture received awards for their outstanding work.

This year, we also recognized almost 100 students at the inaugural Fluid Studio Cording Ceremony for their global experiences across the Bahamas (6), Barcelona, Spain (30), Charleston, SC (30), the Dominican Republic (3) and Genoa, Italy (26). We celebrated both graduating Richard A. McMahan School of Architecture seniors alongside CAAC students who participated in a summer minor program at the Fluid Campuses.

Congratulations to all of our Architecture and Landscape Architecture graduating seniors and to those recognized at the awards ceremony. Your dedication and creativity will take you far as you begin your next chapter beyond Lee Hall.

Meet Sheldon, a 2nd-year Master of Architecture in Health student from Winnsboro, SC.

Why did he choose the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) Architecture Health ( A+H) program:
I chose the M.Arch A+H program once I began to understand the lasting impact architecture can have on people in need. Through guidance from multiple mentors, I became more aware of the role healthcare plays in the world and how design directly influences outcomes.

I realized that what I help design, whether it’s a corridor or an entire medical facility, can affect critical moments in a patient’s journey, including the seconds it takes to receive care. The healing process does not begin in the patient room; it begins well before entering the front door. Healthcare architecture, like all architecture, exists to serve people.

Why he chose Clemson:
I originally chose Clemson because it offered a strong foundation in architectural principles. Growing up in Winnsboro, SC, I did not have access to formal architecture courses, so I was largely self-taught. Clemson’s undergraduate program helped me understand the essence of architecture and how to think critically as a designer.

In addition to the Richard A. McMahan School of Architecture’s strong reputation in healthcare architecture, another significant factor in my decision to stay was the supportive community I have built here over the years.

How Clemson has supported his journey:
Clemson has supported me by helping alleviate financial barriers that could have prevented me from pursuing my education in architecture. Beyond philanthropy, the University has provided me with lifelong friendships and meaningful opportunities to strengthen my understanding of what architecture truly is and who we, as designers, are designing for.

One thing for people interested in pursuing an M.Arch degree at Clemson:
I encourage them to see the design process as the placement of architecture. I encourage any student to fall in love with the process. The M.Arch program teaches processes. As my professor, David Allison, says, “A project should be well crafted, but not precious”. Enjoy the process more than the final iteration.
