It is with great enthusiasm that we announce that Dr. Kyle Barrett has been appointed as chair of the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation. He served as interim chair beginning 2024.

Dr. Matt Holt stated in the announcement, "Dr. Barrett has provided thoughtful, collaborative leadership during an important period for the department. Since joining Clemson in 2012, he has built a strong record in research, teaching, and service while helping advance our land-grant mission through work that supports conservation, natural resources, and the people of South Carolina.
I’m confident Dr. Barrett's leadership will continue to strengthen the department and build on its momentum in the years ahead."

Thank you all for what you do for the forest!

Dr. Robert Baldwin recently delivered a lecture entitled “Future Directions of the Clemson University Forest" to the Clemson-Oconee Friends of Scouting group. 🌲

City of Clemson Mayor Robert Halfacre, Emeritus Professor Vic Shelburne and Scouting Director Charlie Caldwell were also in attendance. The Scouts have completed an impressive 82 projects in the CUF since 1982! 👏

Last week we had an opportunity to visit our new Forestry and Environmental Conservation building with members of the US Forest Service who are stationed at Clemson and their supervisors from Asheville. These USFS employees work closely with many of our faculty and students. Federal partnerships with the department allow us to better meet our land grant mission to serve the people of South Carolina by managing for diverse and productive forests!"

Happy end of the semester to our entire FEC community!

But before it's officially over, we wanted to get in at least one more profile of our great FEC team!

Meet Sandi Priddi! Sandi has served as the Administrative Coordinator for the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation (FEC) since 2022 – she came to us after spending 24 years (!!!) with the Department of Civil Engineering and is a Clemson alum herself (psychology major). As our Admin Coordinator, Sandi plays a critical role by supporting the department chair with the day-to-day operations of the department and serving as the primary point of contact for the public, students, and Clemson faculty and staff. Sandi said of working in FEC: “Forestry is truly a different planet than engineering! I learn something new every day from faculty, staff, students, and even members of the public who call in with the most wonderfully random questions.” This tracks with one of Sandi’s favorite quotes from Benjamin Franklin that relates directly to her love of learning, particularly in the experiential methods: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Although she plans to retire in the next couple of years, we are grateful to have Sandi keeping things running smoothly in the front office of the department! In her free time, you might catch Sandi at a Clemson football or baseball game (she is quite passionate about both!) and walking around campus or in the greater Clemson area; she also enjoys working with her local church choir and spending time with her nose in a good book! Thank you Sandi - we (the department) appreciate you sooo much!

Congratulations to Toni Becker, the recipient of the 2026 CAFLS Outstanding Professional Award. Toni is a true servant to our graduate student body, assisting approximately 200 students from admission to graduation. We are so fortunate to have her as a part of the FEC team.
