We are SO excited to welcome Dr. Kelly Carlson to our Department of Music Therapy team as Visiting Assistant College Lecturer this year!
Dr. Carlson has been a music therapist for over 21 years, and has worked and supervised music therapists with a wide variety of populations including early intervention, children in schools with special needs, adults with ID/DD, memory care, rehabilitation, substance abuse, and hospice care. Dr. Carlson's research interests include the use of intuition in clinical decision-making, professional well-being of music therapists, and historical research into the development of the music therapy field. This is Dr. Carlson's 3rd first year of teaching at the University level, and her head is spinning as she and her family relocated to Cleveland from Iowa with a week's notice. In her free time, Dr. Carlson loves animals, gardening, and spending time with her two children and husband.

Are you looking for a supportive, engaging, and cost-free activity for your child this summer? Cleveland State University’s Department of Music Therapy is thrilled to announce enrollment is OPEN for The R.E.A.C.H. Initiative! This IRB-approved 6-week research camp is specially designed for children and teens (ages 5–17) with medical and neurodevelopmental needs.
What’s included for our families?
- 6 weeks of adaptive group music therapy sessions
- Led by board-certified and licensed music therapists (MT-BC, LPMT)
- FREE weekly campus parking vouchers
- FREE Enya ukulele and "Chord Buddy" tool for your child to keep!
- $50 per family after post-camp surveys are completed
When: Thursday mornings in July & August 2026
Where: Cleveland State University College of Health
Who: Children ages 5–17 with a parent/caregiver remaining on-site to participate in the fun!
