This past weekend, a group of medieval students traveled with Professor Gertsman to New York City to indulge in some incredible medieval objects at the MET, Morgan Library, and the Grolier Club! We were fortunate enough to receive a guided tour of the MET Cloisters’ new special exhibition “Spectrum of Desire: Love, S*x, and Gender in the Middle Ages” by Griffith Mann, Senior Curator at the MET’s Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters. We even spotted some of familiar CMA objects that are on loan for this exhibition! Additionally, we were guided by Sharon Mintz, the Curator of Jewish Art at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary, through the Grolier Club’s fabulous new exhibition “Jewish Worlds Illuminated: A Treasury of Hebrew Manuscripts from the JTS Library.”
We would like to extend a thank you to Griff Mann and Sharon Mintz for taking the time to share their expertise with us. And special thanks are in order for Professor Gertsman for organizing this fantastic trip.

Today, the ARTH 545: Art Around 1000 class had the opportunity to see items from the Guelph Treasury in the Art Study Room with Dr. Gerhard Lutz, the Robert P. Bergman Curator of Medieval Art at the CMA! We were able to view the Portable Altar of Countess Gertrude, the Ceremonial Cross of Countess Gertrude, and the Ceremonial Cross of Count Liudolf. This was an exciting opportunity to view some of the beautiful medieval objects at the CMA, highlighting the perks of the CWRU/CMA joint program!

We are tremendously proud to announce the Tracing Jewish Histories symposium, co-organized by GAMS founder Reed O’Mara, with sessions introduced and chaired by several of our graduate students! See the full program here: https://courtauld.ac.uk/whats-on/tracing-jewish-histories-the-long-lives-of-medieval-hebrew-manuscripts-judaica-and-architecture/

Works of art and architecture made by or for Jewish communities in the medieval period are often examined through the lenses of persecution and expulsion, or are contrasted against Christian or Muslim “styles.” This symposium seeks to expand and nuance these narratives in order to highlight how works of art and architecture can uniquely trace the history of particular Jewish communities by mapping their movements and traditions across generations and geographies. Medieval Jewish objects and spaces can also serve as loci to examine ideas related to collective memory and cultural identity. To that end, the symposium seeks to open new dialogues regarding the “afterlives” of medieval Jewish art more broadly, initiating discussions regarding the ways in which works of art and architecture continued to bear witness to the richness of Jewish life and culture long after they were created.
