In early 2020, the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black Americans because of police brutality compelled the entire country to confront institutional racism and how it has continually failed its citizens of color. The CWRU Spirit Wall, which now asserts our shared commitment that Black Lives Matter, was painted with this motto in June of 2020.

Today, we remember all of the student activism that we have seen at CWRU in the last year from student participation in Black Lives Matter protests in Cleveland and beyond, to the creation of Instagram pages like .at.cwru, , and more that were created to call attention to the mistreatment of minoritized groups at CWRU, to the establishment of the For A Better CWRU Taskforce in the Fall of 2020.

In 1974, William Shockley, a former Stanford University professor, and Roy Innis, the national chairman of the Congress of Racial Equality, were scheduled to debate on the CWRU campus. Shockley was arguing that African Americans were a “genetically inferior” race, but he received so much rightfully deserved backlash from the student population, led by the African American Society, that the debate was called off.

Also in 1970, the CWRU community protested against the Vietnam War. The antiwar sentiment combined with the shootings at Kent State welled into large protests across campus. Students shut down Euclid Avenue in protest.

In May of 1970, the Ohio National Guard shot and killed four unarmed students at Kent State University. In response, CWRU students protested in front of Severance Hall, blocking traffic on Euclid Ave. Students called for the movement of the ROTC program off campus, which was later granted. The students then held a candlelight vigil consisting of about 2,500 candle-carrying mourners marching behind four empty caskets. The protest environment was charged even further by the coinciding protests against the Vietnam War.

To celebrate Legacy Week, we will be highlighting instances of student activism in the past few decades of CWRU’s history. In 1969, over 200 students gathered to protest the sentencing of Ahmed Evans, an African American man who was harassed and cased by police until he and a few others were engaged in a shootout that claimed seven lives. Evans was found guilty of seven counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to death by an all-white jury. The student protesters presented a list of demands to then university president Robert Morse. Among their demands was the call for the university to support the release of Ahmed Evans. In addition, they asked that the university adopt a policy prohibiting the use of research to oppose social movements. What followed was a series of protests and pushes to educate students on the case and the University’s complicity.
