Last week, our Boston-area Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine alumni gathered for an evening to connect with Dean Stan Gerson and local alumni host Barrett Rollins (GRS ’79, MED ’80). Across the country, our alumni are making an incredible impact on the future of healthcare.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and made it such a memorable night!

In 1855, Western Reserve College was drowning in debt and its future was far from certain. Then Henry Lawrence Hitchcock stepped in.

As the third president of the institution that would one day become Case Western Reserve University, Hitchcock did something remarkable: he wiped out the debt threatening to close the college's doors—all while serving as college pastor, professor of Christian theology, and even mayor of Hudson, Ohio.

His name lives on in Hitchcock House on our campus today. But the full story of the man who saved our university deserves to be told.

A building that has stood at the heart of our campus since 1888 is about to become something extraordinary.

Adelbert Gym—one of Case Western Reserve's most storied spaces—is being transformed into DiSanto Arena, thanks to its philanthropic funding—which was completed with a gift from Don Richards (CIT ’79, MGT ‘81) and his wife, Marianne

When DiSanto Arena reopens in spring 2027, it will feature over 6,000 square feet of renovations and expansions—including new locker rooms, a Spartan Gallery social space, a new lobby and entry tower, and upgraded seating

This is what it looks like when Spartans give back.

Do you have a memory of Adelbert Gym? Share it in the comments!

Last weekend, the fourth annual CWRU Alumni Association Destination Weekend brought alumni together for an unforgettable experience—this time, right here at home as we celebrated our alma mater's bicentennial. From exploring the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to discovering wildlife at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and learning more about the city we call home at the Cleveland History Center, alumni reconnected and created new memories.

Next year, Destination Weekend heads to New Orleans, Louisiana. Save the date for March 4-7, 2027 and plan to join us for another exciting alumni adventure.

Commencement is a time-honored tradition. Throughout Case Western Reserve University’s 200-year history, that tradition has evolved and transformed. From the ceremonies of predecessor institutions to the disruption of in-person celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, no two commencements have truly looked the same. Take a look back on CWRU's 200-year commencement history. https://case.edu/news/take-look-back-cwrus-200-year-history-through-archived-commencement-photos?utm_source=sfmc&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=thedaily_universitynews&utm_id=cwruimpact-may2026

Mentorship at Case Western Reserve University helps students thrive—just ask our student-athletes in medicine, who are making a difference for each other through peer support. Their story is a reminder of the impact a mentor can have on a CWRU experience: case.edu/news/cwru-athletes-medicine-power-peer-mentorship
