🎓 Faculty Friday: Meet Dr. Terry Barr! 🎓

“This is what I should be majoring in… because it doesn’t feel like work.”

Dr. Terry Barr’s love for English began with a high school teacher who introduced him to Shakespeare and the power of storytelling. Though he started college as a political science major, it didn’t take long for him to realize that his true passion was in literature—a realization that would shape the rest of his career.

After discovering a love for teaching during graduate school, Dr. Barr followed that calling all the way to PC, where he began teaching in 1987. Nearly four decades later, he has inspired generations of students through courses ranging from Holocaust literature to film, creative writing, and even rock and soul.

“It got to be fun… and I felt pretty confident.”

Throughout his time at PC, Dr. Barr has embraced the spirit of a liberal arts education—bringing creativity, curiosity, and connection into every classroom. From studying abroad with students in Oxford to exploring interdisciplinary topics, his impact has extended far beyond campus.

As he prepares for retirement, Dr. Barr is still creating, teaching, and inspiring. With a co-authored book on SEC football and religion on the horizon and a final lineup of dynamic courses ahead, he’s making the most of every moment.

Thank you, Dr. Barr, for your decades of passion, creativity, and dedication to Blue Hose students! 💙

🎓 Faculty Friday: Meet Dr. Lynne Simpson! 🎓

“An internship may not illuminate the ideal career path, but it certainly can shed light on what you do not want to do.”

Dr. Lynne Simpson’s path to teaching English wasn’t always clear—but discovering what didn’t fit helped her find what truly did. She was first interested in law, but an internship experience revealed that her passion belonged in the classroom. Guiding students through literature, writing, and critical thinking is what she was meant to do.

Dr. Simpson has been a cornerstone of the English Department since joining PC in 1996. She’s known for encouraging students to seize opportunities, explore their interests, and learn from hands-on experiences. Dr. Simpson strongly supports internships and study-abroad programs, helping students gain clarity and confidence as they shape their futures.

What has made PC feel like home for Dr. Simpson is the community. She treasures the close-knit environment that defines the Blue Hose experience - from colleagues who feel like family to students who support and uplift one another, .

“I’ve loved that about PC ever since I arrived here—family, people who truly care, and the best students.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Simpson is excited to teach her Survey of Apocalyptic Literature course and to share her scholarship with a broader audience, continuing to inspire both students and fellow educators through her love of literature.

Thank you, Dr. Simpson, for your dedication, mentorship, and lasting impact on PC students! 💙
