Another alumni making a huge difference in the lives of EL students! Congratulations to Shelley Silvas, an alumna of our summer intensive TESOL program, on this well-deserved honor!

Big shoutout to our very own HCSD EL Specialist Shelley Silvas for earning a prestigious national recognition! 👏⭐️🍎

Right before Christmas, Mrs. Silvas learned she had won 2nd place in the Pearson English Language Teacher Award in the Empowering Teen Confidence in English category. The award commends Mrs. Silvas for the work she has done in giving EL students a voice, building family engagement opportunities for schools and families, and advocating for the rights of English Learner students and their families.

Along with attending an upcoming award ceremony, Mrs. Silvas will participate in a panel discussion during the conference on "Future Skills for the Workplace: Opportunities and Challenges" led by Mike Mayor, Senior Director of Global Scale of English at Pearson. The panel will explore how formal education can better equip English language learners with the skills needed for today’s workplace, touching on themes like globalization, technology, and AI. She has also been awarded 250 credits to continue her professional development. Plus, Pearson will provide free resources for up to 500 students in HCSD to support their English language acquisition.

Congratulations to one our TESOL summer certificate graduates, Kizzie, on winning the Alabama-Mississippi TESOL Susan Spezzini Rural Teacher of the Year Award!

Susan Spezzini Rural Teacher of the Year Awards presented to:

Kizzie Edwards from Carroll County School District in Mississippi

Susan Spezzini Rural Teacher of the Year –This award is given to one nominated rural teacher of the year from Alabama and one from Mississippi. The winners will receive a plaque as well as a scholarship for registration and hotel for next year’s AMTESOL conference.

For MS-Mrs. Kizzie Edwards, a superstar educator who received 20 nominations for her incredible work supporting English Learners (ELs)! As an EL teacher, mentor, BETA Club sponsor, and cheer coach, she goes above and beyond to help her students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.
Mrs. Edwards is passionate about language acquisition, using effective strategies to guide her students through every stage of learning. She advocates for her students, collaborates with colleagues, and ensures families feel connected to the school community. Her caring and supportive nature helps students feel confident, welcome, and ready to thrive.
From her extra effort in the classroom to her role in empowering students and families, Mrs. Edwards is truly one of a kind.

Modern Languages is thrilled that Ashley Krason received the 2023 Distinguished Lecturer in Arts and Sciences, MC's prestigious peer-nominated award. She is an outstanding faculty member honored for her effective teaching, service to the institution, and scholarship in her field.
This award is selected from faculty in the School of Christian Studies and the Arts, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, or the School of Science and Mathematics.
