A group of Ohio State University scholars are conducting research to examine how relationships among content providers, platform operators, and end-users are built and maintained within digital agricultural communication platforms (websites). The project goals are (i) to identify and quantify all platform-related factors with significant influence on participants’ engagement, retention, and satisfaction and (ii) to propose results-based strategic recommendations to participating entities interested in optimizing their platform management practices to better meet user needs.
To accomplish these objectives, we want to collaborate with managers of websites that disseminate relevant agricultural and livestock news and technical information. We understand the University of Maryland Extension’s website is a reference platform responsible for connecting different groups of content providers and users. Thus, we would like to invite you and the leaders of the Extension to collaborate on this study.
For the ex*****on of this project, we will collect data from content providers, website users/subscribers, and platform managers either via surveys or interviews. Our surveys include questions on perceptions, interests, and experiences when providing or seeking news and technical information via agricultural websites. Through interviews with platform managers, we will map the service and product scope offered through the platform and identify key interface characteristics with users/subscribers.
The richness of the resulting dataset will allow for the identification and quantification of factors with varying degrees of impact on the overall users’ satisfaction. From these findings, best platform management practices will arise and serve as benchmarks to further inform participating entities. We will devise strategic recommendations to help participating platforms improve content delivery, foster impactful collaborations, and enhance user satisfaction.

Nationwide survey with users of agricultural communication platforms.
