He started with 500 pens.

When Jun Reiss ’26 arrived at Hamilton as a first-year student, he bought a box of 500 pens and treated them as if he'd never run out: lending them to friends, losing them, and grabbing a new one whenever he needed it.

But as the years passed, the box started to empty, and something changed. Jun began to see the pens differently. Each one became a reminder of the days he had spent and the days he had left at Hamilton.

“My first year, it felt like I had all the time in the world,” he said. By senior year, he found himself holding onto each remaining pen — and each remaining day — a little more tightly.

By the time he gave his Commencement speech as this year’s James Soper Merrill Prize recipient, only one pen remained. Here's what it represented, and why he decided to throw it into the crowd.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of a beloved Hamilton tradition — the senior cane. 🎓 Since 1976, every graduate has walked away with a hand-carved wooden cane as a token of the College's token of the College’s affection and a nod to its long history.

Last month, Hamilton students put their creativity and technical skills to the test during the College's first-ever 24-hour Hackathon, where five teams designed projects focusing on environmental sustainability.

Organized by Soren Lera ’27, Ritchie Registre ’28, and Seth Moore ’27, the Hackathon invited participants to collaborate, build, and present original projects within a single day. Soren says, “We wanted to give students the chance to apply their theoretical learning in a hands-on project outside of class, and they would have a chance to build something cooler."

Congrats to the inaugural winners, MoveOn, a platform that makes it easier for students to give away unwanted items. Learn how that team leveraged their combined expertise in economics, math, and computer science through the link in our comments.
