Welcome, Dr. Niese!!!

Welcome, Dr. Niese!!!

We’re excited to announce our new Assistant Director of Bands, Kevin Niese! As part of this appointment, Niese will serve as the director of the University Band and the Maryland Pep Band, assist with the performance and operations of the Mighty Sound of Maryland and teach the marching band methods course.

Niese recently completed his doctoral work at the University of Iowa, where he actively mentored student teachers, taught coursework in instrumental conducting and assisted with the University of Iowa Bands. His research primarily focuses on disability studies in music education, adjudication practices in secondary music and experiences within marching band culture.

Niese brings with him a wealth of experience leading ensembles at the collegiate and 6–12 levels. He previously served as a graduate assistant conductor for the university bands at Ohio University, and held director positions at public schools throughout Ohio, where his ensembles consistently received exceptional marks in both state and national competitions.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Niese to the University!

The deadline to apply to perform at the 2027 CBDNA National Conference is this Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at 11:59pm. The conference will be held February 24-27, 2027 at the University of Maryland in College Park, MD.

The applications will be screened by committee in a blind audition process. Selected schools will be notified by May 8, 2026.

1) Recordings must be from the current academic year (2025-26) and/or the previous year (2024-25).

2) Submit only live (in concert) unedited recordings totaling no less than 30 minutes and no longer than 45 minutes in length. Unedited refers to the performance itself, as in no correction of performance errors. Apply no post-production edits to the recording (i.e. reverb, equalization, etc.).

3) The principal conductor of the ensemble must be the same across the application procedure and the conference performance. If there is a conductor/director change at the institution, the invitation to perform shall be withdrawn. This does not apply, of course, to guest conductors (associate directors/faculty at the same institution).

4) Ensembles that performed at the 2025 National Conference (Fort Worth, TX) are not eligible to apply.

5) Secure permission to submit an application from your Dean/Director prior to submitting, including discussions regarding finances. By submitting an application you are certifying that you will be in a position to accept an invitation to perform if offered.

6) Applications will only be considered from CBDNA members who have paid their dues for 2025-26. If you have not paid dues, you must do this BEFORE submitting an application. Directors of all performing ensembles at the 2027 conference must maintain active CBDNA membership and are expected to register for the conference.

7) Student members of selected performing ensembles will be required to attend at least one other concert during the conference.

8) In 2018, the CBDNA Board ratified a motion that requires all ensembles at our national conferences to perform at least one work by a composer from a historically underrepresented population.
