The Equine Studies Program at the University of Maryland offers educational programs for youth and adults interested in learning more about the care, use, and management of horses. Within the University setting, we offer classroom and hands-on laboratory activities for students within our B.S. Our students know very well that one of the keys to our success is having our horses housed right across

the street from our classrooms at our on-campus farm. Please make sure to make our on-campus farm a stop on your tour during your next visit to campus. Outside of the University setting, we offer exceptional educational programs to youth within the Maryland 4-H Horse Program and adults through University of Maryland Extension. Whether it is a fun horse bathing contest at the annual Horse Jamboree or a challenging quiz bowl contest at the annual Horse Bowl Contest, our 4-H youth stay active through the year! Our website hosts educational resources including printed and video materials to educate horse owners on a variety of topics form general care and nutrition to pasture management. This institution is an equal opportunity provider. Accommodation request, contact your local UMD
Extension Office.

New World Screwworm is nothing to mess around with. Pay attention as restrictions and inspections may evolve over the next few months.

‼️SCREWWORM UPDATE 06/08/2026 ‼️

As of June 8, 2026, there have now been multiple New World Screwworm detections in Texas, with one being in a county bordering New Mexico. Livestock movement restrictions are in place in Texas and information can be found here: https://www.tahc.texas.gov/

Currently, the US-Mexico border is closed to all livestock exports from the US to Mexico for any reason. This includes all horses. All livestock imports from Mexico to the US are still closed as well. Further, Canada is now restricting all imports of any livestock, including horses, from Texas, and prevents any livestock from entering Canda that have resided in or transited Texas in the previous 21 days prior to importation to Canada.

For updates, make sure to check our website: https://horsecouncil.org/screwworm/
