Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics Professor Anne Simon and her startup Silvec Biologics are on a mission to stop citrus greening, a lethal plant disease threatening citrus trees worldwide.

“We have lots of ideas in different stages of working and I’m hoping we can successfully develop a product that works and will give the citrus industry hope," Anne said.

Congratulations to Professor Daniel Lathrop, Associate Professor Vedran Lekić and doctoral student Heidi Myers!

They were the winners of the Information Sciences Invention of the Year award at the annual Innovate Maryland ceremony. This event recognize those at UMD that are applying their research to real-world applications.

Dan, Ved, and Heidi are using artificial intelligence along with environmental and geophysical data to create low cost, vehicle based devices to detect anomalies under the surface. Applications for this could be detecting landmines safer than current techniques or better identifying underground utilities to prevent accidents.
