EXCITING NEWS! Our Howard Center for Investigative Journalism-led "Off the Rails" project is a finalist for ANOTHER major award! The Online News Association named the investigation one of three projects in the running for this year's Al Neuharth Innovation in Investigative Journalism Award (Small Newsroom category).

“Off the Rails” used unprecedented access to data from RailState LLC, which captures images of every car on every train moving through large swaths of North America, to expose information on safety and regulatory gaps in the rail industry.

The project was our Howard Center's first international investigation, done in collaboration with NPR, CBC, our Capital News Service, Arizona State University’s Howard Center, the University of British Columbia’s Global Reporting Centre, Evident Media and The Narwhal. So happy for all involved!!! 🏆️🏆️🏆️

Today's intern is Caleb Winters, who interned for The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky.

As an investigative intern, Winters worked on stories about hospital price transparency, the Louisville Metro Police Department and an investigation into local art fraud.

“I’d never thought I’d be doing investigative reporting this early into my journalism career," Winters said. "I remember reading the work of Ida B. Wells and Ida Tarbell, Upton Sinclair and Bob Woodward, Jodi Kantor and Jacob Riis. I could only dream of doing the amazing work they do. Now, my dream is more of a reality than ever!”
