Thanks to Maryland Engineering Student Organizations (MESO), students become leaders, teammates, and friends. They take on projects that flex their technical abilities and leadership skills. They gain hands-on engineering experience and learn to shepherd their projects through from start to finish.

The unsung heroes of our undergraduate engineering program have been carefully preparing for the first day of the new academic year.

ENES 100 (Introduction to Engineering Design) is the foundation of our engineering program. It's a required course that provides new engineering students with a roadmap to becoming professional engineers. When students successfully complete this course, they are prepared to tackle an ever-growing list of concepts and challenges.

And there to help them succeed? Our Keystone Teaching Fellows! These undergraduate students are assigned to work with one professor in one section of a Keystone course, including ENES 100. They help the Keystone Instructors with in-class discussion, grade homework and quizzes, hold office hours, provide individual support, and more.

We thank all of our Keystone Teaching Fellows for supporting our newest Maryland Engineers!

On August 30, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will begin its journey to unlock some of the universe's biggest mysteries. 🔭✨

Hear from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center’s systems engineer and Maryland Engineering alum, Missie Vess ’01, M.S. ’05, as she shares why this mission is such a major milestone and offers her message to Terps dreaming of working in the space industry.

What are you hoping Roman will reveal? 🌌

Vess received her undergraduate degree from our Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maryland and her M.S. degree from The Department of Aerospace Engineering at UMCP.

Inside Stanley R. Zupnik Hall in April 2026: Not to bury the lead, but it's looking even better given the summer push!

The space is designed to foster collaboration, beginning with its soaring, six-level tall Atrium that will be surrounded by glass-enclosed laboratories. Huddle rooms, identity-based student organization spaces, and faculty offices will spark the creativity of students and faculty.

Star Wars, Star Trek, The Orville, and Spaceballs: How realistic is space travel in TV shows, movies, and video games?

Dog-fighting TIE (Twin Ion Engine) Fighters in Star Wars: Squadrons? The Orville’s variation on the Alcubierre drive? How do popular ideas on space flight relate to World War II and Vietnam-era naval doctrine?

Space propulsion engineer Jarred Young ’09, M.S. ’13, Ph.D. ’17 reviews some of his science fiction favorites to separate fact from artistic license.

Dr. Young is a Keystone instructor within The Department of Aerospace Engineering at UMCP.
