Stamp Student Union and the Division of Student Affairs, stand firmly in our role to empower students through education on issues of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion and their intersections. In support of our campus' commitment to diversity, multicu

lturalism, and social justice, we advance a purposeful campus climate that capitalizes on the educational benefits of diversity, through student-centered advising, advocacy, programs, research, and practices. 🌊 On the behalf of the Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy suite, we are excited to announce this year’s Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American heritage month: Waves that Move Us. 🌅

For some, the wave is at the center of Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American culture, identity, history, and heritage. We are products of the currents of migration that bring us together just as the oceans keep us apart. At its simplest form, a wave is water that is subjected to a force, an orbital dance between push and pull. From the gravitational pull of the moon to a hand making ripples on the surface of water, waves teach us that each action contributes to a larger movement, for each wave builds on the one before.

🌊 Join us for a guided tour of the “How Can You Forget Me: Filipino American Stories” exhibition, which explores the overlooked history of a trailblazing Filipino community in California from the 1910s to the 1970s through twenty-six steamer trunks found in 2005, three of which are on display in the gallery. Attendees can also join us to explore other exhibitions in the galleries – come see what moves you!

Stamp Student Union coordinates a campus-wide calendar of events to celebrate Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month in April. We are proud to announce our theme this year: Waves that Move Us 🌊

Happy Multiracial Heritage Month 2026! For the next few weeks, we honor the identities, stories, and histories of mixed-race, multiethnic, and transracial adopted individuals.

Introducing…. Multidimensional Me

🕷️🕸️ When light catches a spider web, it diffracts into shifting colors; similarly, multiracial identity can reflect different dimensions depending on where we stand. The 2026 Multiracial Heritage Month theme Multidimensional Me asks us to meditate on the myriad connections and narratives we embody. The image of a spider web illustrates the intricate process of navigating multiple cultural heritages, whether as someone who is biracial, mixed-race, a transracial adoptee, or otherwise living between and across cultures. Like a web, our identities are delicate and intricate, yet strong and resilient. Each strand is a thread of the narrative we get to weave ourselves.

🚀 Many of us exist in predominantly monoracial spaces, having to “dimension-hop” between our communities. Though our individual experiences are unique, we share this common thread. This theme urges us to connect across these dimensions and bridge the gaps between our experiences by recognizing that we are not alone in our story. We are our own community too. 💗

🌟 Let us affirm that we can be both delicate and strong in our heritage whilst creating something greater together. Though a web may seem fragile, its power lies in the intricacy of its intersections.

Elaine Johnson Coates '59 was the first Black woman to receive an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland. Despite discrimination and social isolation, she still earned a B.A. in Education. She passed at age 88 on February 14, 2026. Through her loss, we will remember her for her resilience and grace.
