U.S. Latina/o Studies at UMD

U.S. Latina/o Studies at UMD USLT is an interdisciplinary minor, located in the AMST department which focuses on studying the Latina/o experience and presence in the United States.

The minor in U.S. Latina/o Studies (USLT) is located in the Department of American Studies. USLT is the first program in the Mid-Atlantic region and in the State of Maryland dedicated to the study of U.S. Latina/o experiences in art, history, culture, and politics. Established in 2008, faculty, staff, and student leaders spearheaded important initiatives to match the growing demands of the la

rgest ethnic minority population in the country. These efforts caught national attention and USLT rapidly became a major contributor to the study and examination of race, ethnicity, and culture at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Please join USLT for Avocado Dreams: Remaking Salvadoran Life and Art in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area

Ana Patricia Rodríguez draws from her own positionality as a Salvadoran transplant to examine the construction of the unique Salvadoran cultural imaginary made in the greater D.C. area. Through a careful reading of the creative works of local writers, performers, artists, and artivists, Dr. Rodríguez demonstrates how the people have remade themselves in relation to the cultural, ethnoracial, and sociolinguistic diversity of the area. She discusses how Salvadoran people have developed unique, intergenerational Salvadoreñidades, manifested in particular speech and symbolic acts, ethnoracial embodiments, and local identity formations in relation to the diverse communities, most notably Black Washingtonians, who co-inhabit the region.

Book discussion with Dr. Nancy Mirabal and Jasmin Pineda with Q + A from the audience. Free and open to the public!

LatinXpression Series:

Florecer Aquí y Allá: Activism After Deportation and Coerced Return

How do returnees and deportees organize for social justice in Mexico and beyond? Focusing on the event Florecer Aquí y Allá (Flourishing Here and There) which took place in El Zócalo, Mexico City’s main public square, in July 2019, Dr. Guerrero will explore how art, music, spoken word, and performance are central in presenting critiques about displacement and unfair immigration laws. By focusing on the translocal event, we will begin to see how the experiences of deportees and returnees push them to claim and critique nations on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border and offer a framework that challenges precarity and premature death.

This is a hybrid event with the option to attend in-person or online. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions, all guests and visitors must present their CLEAR Health Pass, CDC vaccination card OR proof of a negative COVID-19 test within the last 24 hours. Masks are required.
