UMD's Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month

UMD's Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month We invite the community to explore and celebrate the connections we each have to Asian Pacific American history and communities at UMD!

We invite you to join the University celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM) 2015! This is the 23rd year that APAHM has been a nationally recognized month-long affirmation of the experiences and contributions of Asian Pacific American communities. This year's theme "Shake the World: The Power is in Our Hands" is inspired by Asian American activist Grace Lee Boggs' quote "We ar

e shaking the world with a new dream". We hope to empower the APA community to come together and create change. We urge the community to realize that they have the power to have their voices heard. Through celebrating our culture and heritage both as Asians and Americans, we shake the world in our own way by presenting a narrative that runs counter to the mainstream.

important message from Janelle Wong:

"Please consider signing on to this letter. If you can sign-on as part of an APA organization, including an Asian American Studies or Ethnic Studies Program, that is especially important. This is urgent because, TODAY (5/23), 100+ Asian American organizations will announce complaints against Brown, Dartmouth, and Yale calling for an end to affirmative action. These are many of the same groups who filed last year's complaint against Harvard.
Race sensitive holistic admissions policies advance equal opportunity in our society for students of color, while also benefiting all students with the promotion of diverse learning environments. We are all in this fight together, and our future is intertwined with other disenfranchised communities. Only together can we provide education as a right for all.
Please take a stand against wedge politics and instead stand together in unity as AANHPIs who support affirmative action to call for equal opportunity in higher education by endorsing this open letter. Please sign on by 12 p.m. PST/3 p.m. EST, TOMORROW, Tuesday, May 24."

URGENT - Please support equal opportunity for all by endorsing the following open letter. We are asking individuals and organizations that serve Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities to sign on to the following national statement in support of affirmative action n...

Talking to Eddy Zheng and Ben Wang about their film BREATHIN': The Eddy Zheng Story. The film was unbelievable!

We are honored that the University of Maryland was the first university to screen the documentary since its release in California earlier this month.

Also, we thank Eddy and Ben for taking the time to answer the audience's questions about the film!

Domestic violence and sexual assault are often treated as distinct forms of violence, but in reality, the two are often intertwined: many abusers who are physically abusive also use sexual violence to exert power and control over their intimate parnters.

Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project will be joining us tomorrow at AAPID Womxn's EMPOWER HOUR // DVRP Service Day Training! Come engage in conversations about intimate partner violence, street harassment, and sexual assault. You can also volunteer at Art as a Voice: Shattering the Silence Surrounding Sexual Violence after you attend this training!

Today marks the beginning of UMD's Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! Our theme is "Reimagine Everything," inspired by Grace Lee Boggs! Please read her original essay!

From a Speech by Grace Lee Boggs I’m a very old woman. I was born in 1915 in what was later known as the First World War, two years before the Russian Revolution. And because I was born to Chinese immigrant parents and because I was born female—I learned very quickly that the world needed changing.…
