Today we’re highlighting Justin Meyer! Justin ( ) joined UMD Loop his freshman year of college and served as a subteam lead when we participated in the tunnel boring challenge and Mechanical Lead for the past year! Justin graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and while on campus was also a member of the Taiwanese American Student Association and swim club. Over the years he interned at the Army Research lab to design rotocrafts and at SpaceX where he designed hardware for Starship (some of which exploded on flight test 3!).

Justin’s favorite memory of Loop was preparing our SAR submission this past semester. He said, “I loved the SAR grind this year, the rush of everybody shaping up their subsystems and the entire team working together to get the video and report together by the deadline. Above all, the thing I’m gonna miss most is the people. Over my 4 years on the team, I met such a wide variety of people that helped mold my engineering and leadership style into what it is today.”

This summer he visited Southeast Asia and joined VAST as a Structural Design Engineer in California!

Today we’re highlighting Aiden Yeo (.yeo), who is graduating this spring with a degree in Mechanical Engineering! Aiden joined UMDLoop his freshman year of college during COVID as a Skeleton Team Member during our tunnel boring days. He later became the Hydraulics Team Lead, and for the past year has served as our President!

While he mainly focused on Loop at UMD, Aiden was also an intern at OrbitLogic where he worked on satellite mission scheduling software for NASA. This past summer he interned for SpaceX as a Launch Engineering Intern at one of the only places in the world that refurbishes spacecrafts for re-flight!

When asked about how UMDLoop impacted him he said, “I’ve had an amazing time on this team. It’s really one of those teams that your return on time invested is ridiculously high. I’ve met lifetime friends and mentors, survived a sandstorm, operated a custom 3000 psi hydraulic power unit, and helped develop a mars rover. I’m going to miss late nights with the team grinding out competition deliverables or fixing broken things (Murphy’s law is real). This team has given me room to test ideas and recover from mistakes. Without a doubt, this team has helped me get the internships and now job that I wanted.”

Aiden’s favorite memory from Loop is “... when we extended the hydraulic cylinders for the first time at competition. We’d been plagued by hydraulics and electrical issues all night. Including when a boring company engineer said our bleed procedures were insufficient, and Amir and I had to come up with a Jerry rigged method of bleeding the hoses. [...] What a night.”

This summer Aiden plans to travel to Europe with family and catch up with friends before flying out to Southern Cali to start full time at SpaceX! We wish you the best of luck with your future endeavors and can’t wait to see the big things you’ll do!

On December 3, 2015. UMD Loop held its first meeting with 26 students from The University of Maryland. Since then, the team has seen unexpected growth and accomplishments that our founders couldn’t have dreamed of. With more than 65 current members, UMD Loop is staring down a new challenge - the first ever Not-A-Boring Competition, held by The Boring Company. While the team works hard to build our own Tunnel Boring Machine, we have opened up public fundraising to help UMD Loop bring as many team members as possible to the competition this summer. To reach our goal, we need everyone’s help! There is no donation too small, as every dollar will go directly to building our TBM and sending our team to competition. Please consider donating to UMD Loop and helping us build the the next generation of transportation! https://www.launch.umd.edu/project/25923

Today’s the day!

Giving day 2021 is a chance to help the UMD Loop team build a tunnel boring machine to compete at The Boring Company’s Not-a-Boring-Competition this summer! UMD Loop will continue a five-year tradition of engineering excellence and innovation.

Everyday, our team members spend countless hours prototyping, designing, and building, not to mention regularly attend class and maintain a very competitive 3.7 average GPA. With every dollar donated, the UMD Loop team is one step closer to building a working TBM.

Donate today: https://giving.umd.edu/giving/fund.php?name=hyperloop-design-competition

Thank you for your support in helping UMD Loop continue its goal of building the next generation of engineers and professionals!

Today’s very special Thank you Thursday is to The Boring Company! We are proud to announce that UMD Loop will be competing in TBC’s first ever Not-a-Boring Competition. Out of nearly 400 applicants, UMD Loop was one of only 12 teams to have advanced through the technical design reviews. We are extremely excited to compete against other great teams from all over the world and will be working tirelessly to make sure our tunneling solution can “Beat the snail!”
