The Center for Nuclear Security Science and Policy Initiatives (NSSPI) is a multidisciplinary organization at Texas A&M University. It focuses on graduate education, research, and service related to the safeguarding of nuclear materials and the reduction of nuclear threats. We work in collaboration with US national laboratories, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and other partners to

address the problems associated with the malicious use of nuclear materials and to study policy issues related to nuclear security. NSSPI combines the talent of internationally recognized researchers from the US's largest nuclear engineering department with renowned policy expertise from Texas A&M's Bush School of Government and Public Service. This team brings unique capabilities to bear on complex nuclear threats and proliferation challenges involving both policy and technology.

Congratulations to our NSSPI graduates!

This weekend, we celebrated three outstanding students as they reached an important milestone:

- Grace Long — Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering with a Nonproliferation Specialization
- Peyton Carr — M.S. in Nuclear Engineering with a Nonproliferation Specialization
- Nuria Putnam — M.S. in Nuclear Engineering with a Nonproliferation Specialization

We are proud of their hard work, dedication, and contributions to the NSSPI community. We look forward to seeing the impact they will make in the field of nuclear security and nonproliferation.

Please join us in congratulating Grace, Peyton, and Nuria!

Unfortunately, our NSSEP courses have been affected by the recent problems with Canvas/Instructure. Our IT team should be redirecting people away from our login screen. You should not try to log in until we have the all clear. If you have attempted to register for courses through TEES Edge yesterday or today, the connection between the registration system and the LMS has been severed to protect learner information. We will try to run a report when the LMS is back to normal and then we should be able to add people in manually. Thanks for your patience. This is a widespread event that is affecting many campuses across the country!

Have you ever wondered how you could take part in a NSSPI field exercise at TEEX Disaster City? Are you curious to see the site for the Energy Proving Grounds at the RELLIS Campus? Do you want to learn the real meaning of “Howdy”?

Join us for a post-INMM Annual Meeting tour to Texas A&M University for a hands-on, behind-the-scenes look at nuclear security, emergency response, and advanced nuclear development in action.

Participants will have the opportunity to:
• Participate in a short field exercise at TEEX Disaster City
• Learn about radiation detectors and gamma spectroscopy analysis software
• Tour the TEEX Emergency Operations Training Center and learn about their emergency preparedness training
• Visit the National Center for Electron Beam Education and Research, an IAEA Collaborating Center
• See the NuScale Simulator at the Center for Advanced, Small, and Micro Reactors (CASMR)
• Enjoy lunch at the RELLIS Campus, included with registration

This tour offers a rare opportunity to visit several of Texas A&M’s unique facilities and see how we are contributing to nuclear security, emergency response, advanced training, and emerging nuclear technologies.

Registration includes lunch. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up today for the Texas A&M post-INMM Annual Meeting tour as part of your Annual Meeting registration!

The 2026 American Nuclear Society Student Conference is wrapping up today here in College Station!

NSSPI students kicked off the conference by helping lead a Radiation Detection & Emergency Response Workshop with Dr. Mariano at Disaster City. Participants were introduced to fieldwork techniques and learned how to use Interspec to analyze collected data. NSSPI students also led tours of the radiation detection lab for attendees.

Several NSSPI students presented their research during the conference. Jason Scott and Pearl Smith shared presentations on the joint nuclear forensics work they have been conducting with Dr. Naqvi and Dr. Folden. John Corder presented his work with Dr. Marianno investigating gamma spectroscopy effects in systems that integrate CZT detectors into a neutron well counter.

In addition, Dr. Yim moderated a discussion on global nuclear tensions featuring panelists Dr. Marvin Adams, former NNSA Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs; Dr. Siegfried Hecker, NSSPI faculty fellow; and Alan Evans of Sandia National Laboratories.

We are proud of our students and faculty for representing NSSPI at this year’s conference!

The second half of the Domestic Nuclear Facilities Experience brought our group to two important sites. At Urenco USA in Eunice, New Mexico, we saw uranium enrichment operations firsthand and had the opportunity to speak directly with operators, scientists, and safeguards experts about the facility’s work. We then visited Waste Control Specialists in Andrews, Texas, where we learned more about the safe disposal of radioactive waste and the advantages of the site’s uniquely stable geological setting.

We are grateful to the teams at both facilities for their time, generosity, and insight, and to the NNSA's Office of International Safeguards for supporting this outstanding study tour.

The Domestic Nuclear Facilities Experience kicked off Monday and Tuesday with tours at Sandia National Laboratories. Many thanks to Mo Payne and Adam Williams for organizing the Sandia tours and to Farnaz Alimehri for meeting with the students to discuss international safeguards and her time at the IAEA.

The group of then visited the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History in Albuquerque and participated in a 3S training exercise designed by University of New Mexico student Lauren Crabtree.
