When Aggie Baseball fans head to Blue Bell Park, they will see a small playground down the right field line where kids laugh and play.

It’s called Spencer’s Corner, named after six-year-old Spencer Patton Squire.

Spencer’s legacy reaches beyond that playground. It marks a scholarship for students in our College, handwritten letters his grandmother sends to each recipient and a woman whose life he saved.

From classroom to real-world impact.

Drs. Melanie Kinskey and Benjamin Herman of our Texas A&M Department of Teaching, Learning and Culture are leading efforts to connect K–12 students with real-world transportation challenges by developing engaging, hands-on curricula for local schools.

That work came to life when fourth-grade students from Bryan ISD's Houston Elementary wrapped up their sediment and erosion unit with a field trip to the Texas A&M Transportation Institute's Sediment and Erosion Control Lab at the RELLIS Campus.

With the help of TTI experts and preservice Aggie teachers, students explored erosion control through hands-on testing and gained a better understanding of the concepts they learned in class.

This partnership showcases the power of collaboration in expanding opportunities for young learners while preparing the next generation of educators.

Congratulations, Lisa!

Huge congratulations to Lisa Cantu on being appointed as the next Student Regent for the Texas A&M University System!

Lisa is currently pursuing her PhD in the PK-12 program and has already demonstrated outstanding leadership and service across higher education in Texas. As the student representative for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, she has contributed meaningful student perspectives at the state level while also engaging in qualitative research alongside THECB staff researchers.

This appointment is incredibly well deserved, and we are excited to see the impact she will continue to make. Congratulations again, Lisa!

From meeting with leaders to observing the legislative process firsthand, these future educators experienced what it means to lead not just in the classroom, but in their communities and beyond.

The Leveraging Digital Learning Tools (LDLT) Technology Showcase highlighted immersive learning through interactive presentations held in Rudder Tower and at Texas A&M University-Higher Education Center at McAllen.

As part of the TEACH-VR project, funded through a Teaching Excellence Grant, preservice teachers shared demonstrations showing how virtual reality and digital learning tools can support engagement in K-12 classrooms. From history and science lessons to simulations and hands-on activities, the showcase featured creative approaches to classroom technology and learning experiences.

When children struggle to read, the usual explanations cite intelligence or eyesight. One of the largest analyses of its kind is challenging both assumptions and offering a different picture of how reading skills develop.

Dr. Daniel Hajovsky of our Department of Educational Psychology led the study, which also points to practical steps teachers and parents can take to support struggling readers.

Among the Aggie graduates taking the stage at Reed Arena this weekend is Regina Salinas ’26, who will receive her bachelor’s in Human Resource Development and make history in the process.

Regina is our College’s first official graduate from the Texas A&M University-Higher Education Center at McAllen.

“This milestone means a lot to me, and I’m grateful for everyone who supported me throughout this journey,” she said. “Being the first HECM graduate from the College of Education and Human Development is something I’m very proud of.”
