“Give them more than what they’re expecting. That, to me, is marketing.”

For Arch “Beaver” Aplin III ’80, that idea helped turn Buc-ee's from a single convenience store into one of the most recognizable brands in the country, with 55 locations across the United States. Now, through his transformative gift toward the Aplin Center at Texas A&M University, that same entrepreneurial spirit will continue to grow and develop at Mays Business School.

The Arch H. Aplin III '80 Department of Marketing and the future Aplin Center, opening in 2028, will carry his philosophy forward by giving Mays students new ways to explore marketing and retail in action. Through hands-on learning opportunities, students will be able to test ideas, make real decisions, and see their work come to life through the customer experience.

For Aplin, this gift is rooted in a desire to give back. For Mays, it represents what is possible when entrepreneurial vision meets bold ideas and a shared belief that great business starts with understanding people and serving them well.

Jamie Duke ’97, a 2026 recipient of the Mays Business School Outstanding Alumni Award, is known by many for her infectious personality and the energy she brings to every room, but she has also defined herself as a strategic leader in the corporate world who creates transformational impacts.

As a student, Duke made the most of her time at Texas A&M University through her involvement in organizations within the Memorial Student Center (MSC). Her dedication, focus, and ability to motivate others led her to serve in several leadership roles, eventually working as executive vice president of programs for the MSC during her senior year, earning her the Buck Weirus Spirit Award and the Thomas H. Rountree Award for leadership and service.

That same drive and spirit has carried into her professional career at Samsung Electronics America, where she created from scratch the department she now runs as director of strategic projects. Those who work with Duke describe her as dependable, positive, and someone every team is better for having. Her commitment to Texas A&M has continued through her service with the Aggie Women Network, the 12th Man Foundation Board of Trustees, and as a Legacy Society member of the Texas A&M Foundation. She and her husband, Mike McClain, also created an Aggie Ring scholarship in honor of her grandparents, who helped make it possible for her to receive her own Aggie Ring.

From the way she leads to the ways she gives back, Duke embodies the Aggie Spirit. Watch her story to hear more about her inspiring accomplishments and continuing commitment to supporting students, strengthening the Mays community, and leaving a lasting impact at Texas A&M. 👍

Chris Work ’90, a 2026 recipient of the Mays Business School Outstanding Alumni Award, is more than familiar with the abilities it takes to make an impact: hard work, humility, and a deep belief in the power of the Aggie Network.

After being recruited to Texas A&M University to play football, Work became the team’s only scholarship accounting major, balancing athletics with the rigor of Mays’ James Benjamin Department of Accounting. Through it all, he stayed committed to his schoolwork, his team, and his future, even turning study nights at the Sterling Evans Library into “date nights” with his now-wife Shannon Work ’90.

That same discipline carried into a career shaped by generosity, tenacity, and a continuous pursuit of learning — qualities he now channels into the way he gives back. Work supports Mays and its students through need-based scholarships, mentorship with the AmplifyU program, and service on the Dean’s Advisory Board.

From the opportunities that shaped his career to his commitment to the next generation, Work and his story are reminders of what makes the Aggie Network so meaningful. 👍

In Texas, few things bring people together like barbecue, and for Shane Stiles ’00, that love became a legacy.

After graduating from Mays Business School with a degree from the Adam C. Sinn ’00 Department of Finance, Stiles moved to Austin and soon began dreaming about bringing his beloved Central Texas barbecue to the Capitol city. In 2011, he and his wife, fellow Mays grad Catherine Stiles ’00, opened Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew, named after a historic railroad stop near his hometown of Taylor, Texas. Stiles Switch has grown to three locations across the Texas Hill Country with 146 employees and has landed a spot on Texas Monthly’s “Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas” list three out of the last four times it’s been published.

“Bet on yourself. Make your own luck. If you have the passion for it, take the chance — you’re not going to regret it. You’re only going to regret the chances you didn’t take,” Stiles says.

Today for National BBQ Day, we’re celebrating an Aggie who took the education and entrepreneurial mindset he built at Mays Business School and turned a Texas tradition into something special.

Todd Routh ’86, a 2026 recipient of the Mays Business School Outstanding Alumni Award, has built a legacy defined by honor, integrity, and a commitment to doing things the right way.

That service‑first mindset traces back to his time at Texas A&M University, where he was drawn to the culture and the Aggie Core Values, principles that still guide him today.

After earning his BBA from Mays’ Adam C. Sinn ’00 Department of Finance, Routh followed an entrepreneurial path, building a successful career in real estate development one project at a time. Today, he’s sharing his insights and supporting the next generation of real estate professionals as an instrumental member of the Aggie Real Estate Advisory Board. His impact has gone beyond personal success as he and his family have invested in Aggies through support for Mays’ future graduate studies building, as well as the Routh First‑Generation Center, scholarships, and endowments for Mays students.

Watch his story to see how he embodies the Aggie Spirit and Mays’ mission to make a positive difference in the communities where we live, work, and serve. 👍

“That’s what a good team should do: constantly encourage, inspire, and motivate each other.”

Flip and Susan Flippen, founders of The Flippen Group and Teamalytics, and namesakes of the Flippen Leadership Institute at Texas A&M University, sat down with Ben Wiggins ’07 ’18 for the season finale of the Aggie Legends podcast to discuss leadership that begins with character and grows through trust. Drawing from their Capturing Kids’ Hearts program and decades of work in education, business, and organizational culture, the Flippens share why it is vital, when serving others, to make sure your actions speak louder than words and how teams perform at a higher level when people feel valued and trusted.

AI is changing how students learn and develop new ideas. Business schools need to learn faster, too.

This year, Mays Business School redesigned the AI Venture Velocity Challenge around a simple question: How can students use AI to test, learn, and build faster while still thinking carefully about what is worth building?

The response: 531 student teams submitted applications for ventures focused on healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, energy, education, financial services, consumer products, and AI-native software. The teams came from 160 institutions across the United States: research universities, regional campuses, liberal arts colleges, master’s-focused institutions, community colleges, and technical colleges.

But the number is not the main story. The story is what students are showing us about entrepreneurship in the AI era. These students are using AI to move faster on problems they already care about.

We appreciate Deloitte and the Deloitte Foundation for their continued support of the AI Venture Velocity Challenge.

Learn alongside us as we share data from the challenge on this interactive dashboard. Stay tuned for more to come as teams begin submitting experiment logs and showing how they are testing, learning, and building with AI.
