Cognitive archaeology is a truly interdisciplinary field that applies the theories and methods of several academic domains (cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, archaeology, linguistics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of consciousness, etc.) to the tangible evidence for human evolution—non-human primate anatomy and behavior, human neuroanatomy, hominin paleontology, and archaeology. It studies t

he origins and adaptive purposes of such cognitive processes and capabilities as concept formation, spatial cognition, social cognition, language, symbolic structures, and working memory. ANTH 4200/5200: Advanced Topics in Archaeology: Ideational Cognitive Archeology

Ideational cognitive archaeology is a field that is concerned with inferring the mind frames of people in the past based on material remains. What kinds of beliefs did ancient people have? What were these people’s values and norms? What meanings did objects hold for these people? Join us this spring in exploring how archaeologists answer such questions; and ponder the interesting beliefs and perceptions that pervaded the minds of ancient people.
