Mi Gente My People will now be known as Latinx Student Union! We now have a new logo that underwent heavy research and is a nod to the heritage of our club!
The original reasoning behind how we came to be Mi Gente My People was in an effort to expand our club by becoming more inclusive and welcoming! With this in mind, we revisited our logo and name to find a better way to express this and further that vision!
Taking a look at our logo, we wanted to continue acknowledging the roots of our club and the legacy of the students that laid the groundwork for this club, specifically with the raised fist that was in our logo. With the new logo we intentionally made the fist into an outline to truly express that we as Latinos have a multitude of skin tones and that we are not defined by a one size fits all within our cultures, languages, and backgrounds. Alongside this change, we also lined our logo with the nationally recognized flags of Latin America to emphasize the diversity of our communities.
The most difficult part of this journey was ultimately the name. The LSU acronym could potentially stand for a handful of variations of our name: whether it to be Latino Student Union, Latine Student Union, Latin Student Union, or Latinx Student Union. While having to decide with which variation to go with, this process outlined how large of a label Latino/a/x/e encompasses. Just looking at the different ethnic labels, cultures, and history within the United States that fall under the larger label of Latino, we see things like: Chicanos, Hispanic, 1st generation Americans, Mexican Americans, Cubanos, etc, which acknowledges the difficulties of trying to come up with a label that is all encompassing.
With having our name as the Latinx Student Union, we want to make it explicit what organization we are, an organization that is here for all students that feel a since of connection to our culture and empowers our members to succeed in all of their pursuits.
With these changes, we move forward rebranded and excited to foster a community that truly showcases the richness and diversity of our people as the Latinx Student Union.
