Librarians like to say that an hour in the library is worth a month in the laboratory, quips Kristin Briney, biology and biological engineering librarian at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, California. And the Caltech library team points out that a researcher could avoid hours of solo Internet searching by just sending a quick e-mail to a specialist librarian to get the same results.

Librarians can be key research partners who help to scour the literature, manage data and make science open.

As research becomes increasingly data driven, faculty across disciplines are facing new challenges—finding high quality datasets, designing effective data collection workflows, interpreting large datasets, and complying with evolving funder requirements. These tasks require time, expertise, and a deep understanding of the modern data landscape. Seeing a need to expand upon her data services knowledge, Piper Brown-Kingsley, the Data Services Librarian at the Health Sciences Library, recently completed the Medical Library Association (MLA) Data Services Specialization to help faculty and students navigate their complex data needs.

As a first-generation student, I have always been passionate about supporting first-generation students! After joining Mizzou as a Student Success Librarian, I started supporting first-generation student initiatives. In the past year, I have built tools and initiatives at the library that support our first-generation students both directly and indirectly. I’ve presented at student events, to student parents, and at tabling events to share library tools with first-generation students, and I am so excited that they have found our resources helpful!

Recently, I interacted with a student who wanted advice on where to spend their time between classes. This question of where to pass time on campus applies to both new and returning students. Mizzou’s campus is large, and not all academic buildings have seating outside of classrooms. This question reminded me of one reason I enjoy spending time in the Libraries on campus; they’re third places I know I can exist without any expectations. Access to resources, like printers and phone chargers, is also a major bonus.

Many graduate students find the research and writing process to be quite overwhelming. Responding to requests from international doctoral students for extra support in navigating academic writing, the Campus Writing Program (CWP) created the Learn & Write series in the fall of 2024. CWP joined with the Writing Center and Mizzou Libraries to offer a Learn & Write series for graduate students. Each writing session included a brief program specific to graduate and academic writing.

This year’s MU Remembers ceremony, commemorating students, faculty, and staff who have passed away in the last year, was held on Friday, April 10. A book in remembrance of each honoree has been added to the University of Missouri Libraries’ collection. Commemorative bookplates are placed inside the books, and honorees’ names are placed on the books’ library catalog records.

When a faculty member requested a rare academic title available only in a few libraries in Germany, the Mizzou Libraries’ Resource Sharing team sprang into action. The title was not held by any U.S. libraries, and only two German institutions participating in OCLC’s International Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service had it in their collections. Ordinarily, these libraries reliably fulfill our requests. But this time, both declined. The reason? A surprising consequence of international trade policy.
