The Gamecock family is mourning the loss of Joe Rice, a two-time alumnus (B.S. '76, J.D. '79) and one of the most transformative benefactors in our university's history.

A nationally respected litigator, Joe played a significant role in landmark civil litigation involving asbestos liabilities, the to***co industry and more. In 2023, his $30 million gift to USC funded scholarships, endowed professorships and support for students pursuing children's law — and led to our law school being renamed the Joseph F. Rice School of Law in his honor. The Rice Athletics Center also carries his family's name, a reflection of generosity that reached across our campus for decades.

USC President Michael Amiridis said it best: "Joe Rice was a man whose impressive combination of intellect, character, wisdom, spirit and generosity defined a life that made an outsized impact on the world he inhabited. Such a rare man leaves an imprint that lives on long beyond his lifespan, and this will inevitably be true for Joe. The University of South Carolina was honored to know him as an alumnus, friend, benefactor, and one of the greatest Gamecocks of our time."

Joe's generosity will continue to shape the lives of students for generations to come. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and everyone who loved him.

When Rachel and Brian Clouse's daughters Livia and Amanda Joy were diagnosed with Fragile X Syndrome, they discovered a troubling gap: because research has focused almost entirely on males, females with FXS are chronically underdiagnosed and underserved. So they started the LivJoy Foundation — and funded a postdoctoral fellowship at USC's Arnold School of Public Health to help close that gap. This December, the Koger Center for the Arts at the University of South Carolina will celebrate acclaimed South Carolina born, international artist Jonathan Green through a series of exciting activities in which the community is invited to participate.

On December 16, the Koger Center will host the world premiere of Eliza, a new chamber opera commissioned by the Jonathan Green Maritime Cultural Center with support from the SC250 Revolutionary Sesquicentennial Commission. Green is the set and costume designer. The opera tells the story of the African market women who operated the Charleston City Market for more than 200 years, with a focus on their activities, in partnership with Jewish femme soles, during the British occupation of Charleston.

From December 7–11, a Gullah holiday market featuring international, South Carolina, and Green-inspired merchandise will be open in the Koger Center lobby each day from 3–7 p.m. Jonathan Green will make daily appearances at the market. A limited-edition collectible poster and other merchandise related to the Eliza opera are available online now.

Proceeds from these activities support the work of the Jonathan Green Maritime Cultural Center at USCB - University of South Carolina Beaufort , including its teaching art collection and research library, helping to ensure that the Gullah heritage of the South Carolina Lowcountry, an integral part of the global African diaspora, is preserved for future audiences.

Carolina donors just made history!

$357.6 million raised in FY26 — the most in USC history, nearly $100M more than last year's record. Almost 48,600 donors gave, including 16,000+ giving for the first time.

The University of South Carolina system raised a record $357.6 million in private support during fiscal year 2026 — the most in its history, shattering the previous fundraising record of $259.7 million, set just one year earlier, by nearly $100 million.

The University of South Carolina has lost an extraordinary benefactor and friend. Janice S. McNair passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at the age of 89.

Janice and her late husband, Bob, dedicated their lives to giving back to their community through a shared passion for education, faith, and medical research. Through The Robert and Janice McNair Foundation, they established the McNair Scholars Program, which attracts some of the nation's most talented students and faculty to the University of South Carolina.

In 2015, the McNairs expanded their vision by establishing programs at universities across the country to empower students with an understanding of free enterprise and the entrepreneurial skills needed to create and grow new ventures. The McNair Institute for Entrepreneurism and Free Enterprise at the University of South Carolina serves as a model for entrepreneurship centers in higher education.

Janice and Bob's generosity, leadership, and commitment to excellence have left an enduring legacy that will positively impact USC students, faculty, and the broader community for generations to come.
