Isaiah 43:16-21
The New Thing I'm Going To Do

I asked my kids what kinds of things they could imagine that could possibly be God’s best, that might be coming, that we can’t see or fathom right now. In other words what can we get that’s better than Jesus?

Me: (obviously) thinner thighs for all who want them, student loan debt "forgiven", something that tastes better than chocolate, world peace, kinder people, etc. (I didn’t say any of this out loud...you’re welcome.)

Kids: raining love, no devil, two Jesus’.

Make thinking visible! Imagine learning a sport (or dance) when those who know how to do it can't be seen. We can make thinking more visible than it usually is in classrooms. It gives students more to build on and learn from. Add these questions of thinking to your classroom language. “What's going on here?” “What do you see that makes you say so?”

Example-Teacher shows a satellite picture of a hurricane without identifying it. Ask the first question. Student says “storm over Fla.” Example- Teacher asks second question. Student points out profile of Fla. visible through the clouds. Move on to another student.

A lot less thinking happens if we just show the picture and say “This is a hurricane” or “What is this?”

It is informal interpretation and hypothesis.

The thinking is visible because now everyone knows why everyone else thinks what they do. Powerful!
Model your thinking throughout the day too! Your "what’s going ons?" and "whys?"

Are your kids thinking or responding?

How would you teach a child who read, "He rolled down the store on his belt." vs. "He rode down the street on his bike." (if the reading was like this consistently)?

What does this poem make you think about?
Invictus
Out of the black night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shad,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
The captain of my soul.

William Ernest Henley

Teachers: What is a post-reading strategy you can use for this poem?

We learn things all the time without really realizing it. Our mind is permanently "wired up" to learn and it is continually processing new experiences. However, being wired up is not the same as being "switched on". You have to actively engage your mind to get the best out of...life!

Are all your students learning at the highest level they can? Without a doubt, your answer is no. Many factors contribute to that including poverty, lack of access to early experiences, high mobility...We can't control any of those factors. What we can control is the quality of teaching that we provide. The effects of knowledgeable, well-prepared teachers can be stronger than the influences of student background factors. Teacher expertise produces student learning!
