“My experiences in South America fueled my desire to confront the social power imbalances in the United States and to continue fostering connections with Latin American immigrants…The Fulbright grant opened the door for me to form a strong network of professional connections and to understand firsthand the origin of migrants’ and women’s rights issues. It has profoundly influenced my personal and professional trajectory.” Becca Taylor: 2013 Mizzou Alumna, 2013-2014 Fulbright U.S. Student Program Teaching Assistant (Bogotá, Colombia), 2019 University of Southern California Gould School of Law

Becca has dedicated her life to advocating for women in Latin America and immigrant communities in the US. She recently provided an update to the Fellowships Office that speaks to her current work in Bogotá, representing clients fleeing domestic violence through a legal internship at the Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project, and finishing her degree from USC Gould School of Law.

Like Becca, The Fulbright Program could be part of your professional and personal journey. Mizzou students and recent alumni: the campus deadline to apply for Fulbright is September 3, 2018. Contact the Fellowships Office now to start your application!

from Allie Choate (MU Class of 2017, Current PhD student at the University of South Florida):

“The process of applying for a Fulbright helped prepare me for my graduate school applications. I really enjoyed meeting with the board who reviewed my Fulbright application, as they had extremely valuable feedback that really helped shape/improve my application and personal statement…Self-reflection is instrumental to any sort of self-improvement, whether it be within the academic, career, or personal level. Learning to be critical of myself and accept criticisms and suggestions from others has helped me grow as an individual, but also as a student, researcher, and clinician.”

As an MU student, Allie applied for a Fulbright grant to attend King’s College London and the Mark Twain Fellowship. Through applying for these awards, Allie developed into a competitive candidate for graduate study and solidified her commitment to doing what she loves: helping people through research and therapeutic work.

Allie’s goals may lead her to apply next for the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship next, and she says her “past experiences have been beneficial in preparing to do so.”

from Brian Pellot (MU Class of 2010, University of Oxford Class of 2012):

“I met with the Fellowships Office as a freshman and became a regular visitor during my time at MU. The Fellowships Office helped me craft and refine application essays and even organized mock interviews ahead of my Rhodes and Marshall interviews. This practice was perfect training for the grant-writing roles I've since undertaken to keep media and human rights non-profits alive and thriving.”

For Brian Pellot, discussing fellowship opportunities as early as his freshman year laid the foundation for what has become his international journalism career. Selected for the Marshall Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford for two years, Brian has since worked and reported from more than 50 countries and currently resides in Cape Town, South Africa.

When asked what motivates his work, Brian says, “By shining light on taboos, I aim to break their power. My global work challenges stigmas, replacing stereotypes and discrimination with accuracy and respect. I facilitate and promote media coverage to safeguard and champion marginalized communities and to advance human rights.”

from Claire Friedrichsen (MU Class of 2013, Current PhD Student at the University of Florida):

Claire Friedrichsen studies in Soil and Water Sciences, “researching the communication gap between farmers, extension agents, and scientists.” Her research involves four case studies, two in India looking at wastewater treatment and two in Florida evaluating tropical fruit and vegetable production and soil subsidence.

As a recipient of a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant, Claire shares that her fellowship experience “has allowed me the intellectual freedom to pursue my own questions” and found learning the skills of self-reflection, determination, persistence, and grant writing to be the most valuable lessons in applying for these opportunities.

Visit fellowships.missouri.edu to explore how applying for fellowships could allow you to pursue your own questions about the world.

from Rachel Patteson (MU Class of 2018, University College London Class of 2019):

“Coming into applying for the fellowships, I lacked a lot of confidence in my ability to be awarded anything. I compared myself to a lot of people. But in this application process, I was able to find my own strengths and abilities that matched my passions, wants, and needs.” Rachel Patteson

As a freshman Rachel knew she wanted to go to graduate school. She dedicated her undergraduate career to engaging in research and field work on climate change, which took her to South Korea, Alaska, and Russia. Applying for multiple fellowships – the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Gates Cambridge Scholarship, and the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship – supported Rachel in forming her life experiences to date into a compelling narrative. Rachel writes that the fellowship application process “organized my thoughts on what being involved in academia means to me. It furthered my commitment to education and my motivation to research climate change.”

As the 2018 Mark Twain Fellowship recipient, Rachel will continue her academic pursuits at the University College London this fall. After finishing up her degree at UCL, Rachel will begin doctoral work with the support of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.

from Fares Akremi (Mizzou Class of 2015, Stanford Law Class of 2018):

“The application process helped me hone my sales pitch far beyond anything I'd had to do before. I was forced to boil my aspirations down into 1000-word essays that caught the eye of folks who make decisions. The process both spurred self-reflection and prepared me for communicating about the causes I hold dear.”

As Fares’ comment demonstrates, applying for fellowships is a meaningful process of introspection, looking beyond your time at Mizzou, and advocating for the future you desire. Fares shares, “I don’t think I would have gotten into Stanford Law School if not for the practice in drafting personal statements and selling my story.”

Fares graduates from Stanford Law School this spring. His next step is clerking for federal judges in Chicago and Washington, DC.

Applying for fellowships supports you in developing the skill of introspection to use throughout your life. Visit fellowships.missouri.edu to start thinking about where advocating for your future through applying for fellowships could lead you.

is the question we ask students and recent alumni to consider this time of year, as now is the time to commit to applying for post-baccalaureate fellowships. Programs including the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, Schwarzman Scholars, Rhodes Scholarship, and more have first deadlines as early as August.

Next week we’ll post responses from five prior fellowship applicants who speak to why you might want to apply for a fellowship. While not all of these applicants received the awards they sought, they all found value in the application process itself.

from fellowship applicants starts next week. Stay tuned!
