USC Civil and Environmental Engineering

USC Civil and Environmental Engineering The latest from the University of South Carolina Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Civil engineering is everywhere: the buildings in which we live and work, the roads on which we travel, the water we drink, the bridges we cross. Civil engineers design industrial and commercial buildings, bridges, towers, dams, tunnels, and mass transportation facilities. They manage urban planning and public works projects, perform air quality monitoring, and plan and design waste collection and handling systems.

Why Engineering?
Jared Blazek, '26, Civil & Environmental Engineering

“'Never accept the world as it appears to be. Dare to see it for what it can be.'

This is probably one of the most influential quotes I’ve heard in my life, and I believe it applies perfectly to what it means to be an engineer or computing professional. Society is continually evolving, always seeking ways to enhance life. Simply put, progress demands change, and engineers and computing professionals help spearhead that change.

Whether creating innovative designs or the relentless pursuit of solutions to the most difficult problems, the legacy we create will last generations and improve the lives of millions more."

Why Engineering?
Jack Mesaric '27, Civil & Environmental Engineering
Hometown: Greenville, South Carolina

"I chose to pursue a career in civil engineering because of my strong passion for design, structures and problem-solving. From a young age, I was fascinated by buildings and enjoyed learning about and drawing various architectural styles, which ultimately led me to civil engineering. As I explored the field further, I became excited by the endless opportunities it offers and the amazing career paths available, which has reinforced my decision to pursue a future as a civil engineer."
