Seasonal allergies in South Carolina are made worse by the abundance of pollen-producing trees like live oaks, longleaf and Virginia pines, and magnolia trees.

Look what some of our star volunteers stumbled across! A tiny member of the Broomrape family Orobanchaceae in the genus Euphrasia, collected by Tom Daggy from Finland in 1988. The anatomy of the flowers and fruit (which often are distorted during the drying process) are preserved in this highly detailed, masterful illustration that accompanies the specimen. Portions of the Davidson College Herbarium were transferred to the UNC Charlotte Herbarium (UNCC) in 1996 from whence we obtained this material through exchange.

Botany Walk this week, Wednesday, Dec. 18 will include a DISCO party. We’ll take a look at the wild side of campus with a look at a native Orchid species Tipularia DISCOlor. So named because the leaves are green above and purple below (ie two color). This easily overlooked gem sports these colors only during winter. Leaves die back during the growing season when it sends up a slender stalk of flowers that glue pollen to the eyes of a butterfly that pollinates it.

Come see Dr. Herrick Brown and Maura Flannery from the talk about the Saga of the Swamp Thing comics! Covering aspects of ‘monstrosities’ in a historical sense, or in the sense that Darwin referred to mutations as well as other literary references to monstrous plants and the use of such notions in horticulture. The Swamp Thing is presumably something born out of an agro-chemical spill that drained into a swamp – mostly plant, but with human sentience and feelings. This event will be an open discussion with many topics in conversation!
