Missouri Photo Workshop

Missouri Photo Workshop "Truth with a camera." The workshop motto was written by the MPW faculty in May 1959. When the late Clifton C. Ideally truth is a matter of personal integrity.

The roots of the Missouri Photo Workshop are embedded firmly in six decades of rich tradition; current workshops carry principals present from the beginning. Edom of the Missouri School of Journalism founded the Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949, he too, looked to the past to map the path for photojournalism's future. Inspired by the gritty, content-rich photographs of the documentary photo unit of

the pre-WWII Farm Security Administration, Edom promoted research, observation, and timing as the methods to make strong story-telling photographs. FSA director Roy Stryker and photographer Russell Lee worked closely with Edom in the creation of the workshop and served as faculty members during its early years. In subsequent years, faculty members have been many of America's leading newspaper and magazine photographers and photo editors; a roster of faculty and students reads like a Who's Who of photojournalism. Faculty of today includes some of the most energetic, productive, and articulate documentarians currently working. All are experts dedicated to passing on the fundamentals of photo research, shooting, and editing to those who hope to carry on these values and techniques in the future. The workshop still follows Cliff Edom's credo: "Show truth with a camera. In no circumstances will a posed or faked photograph be tolerated."

The application page is open! Apply by April 5, 2025. www.missouriphotoworkshop.org. (About this photo: Thousands saw photos from the MPW archive when the "Small Towns, Big Stories" exhibit was in the State Historical Society of Missouri last year. This photo from Washington, Missouri, was one of the 121 photos on display. SHSMO assistant director of education Beth Pike has roots in Washington and learned more about this photo taken in 1972 at MPW24 by Phyllis Fernandez Romero, who was then a freelance photographer in New York City. "The Remillard children, Lynn, Tim, Laurie and Linda, wait for a school bus on the corner of Sixth and Wilson as the youngest sibling, Luann, peeks out of a window in the family’s home. The children’s uniforms met the standard dress code at Our Lady of Lourdes. Photographing daily life in a small town encouraged photographers to make meaningful pictures out of ordinary situations. Participation in the workshop often came from word-of-mouth recommendations, and that participation changed the visual culture at many newspapers.") Today, photographers and documentarians come to MPW at all stages of their careers. Daily news photographers are part of the mix which includes freelancers, photo editors, conservation photographers, non-profit photographers, etc. If you care about the process of finding, pitching and photographing an intimate picture story, we're here for you in Missouri.
