Every spring, our program selects two senior students to travel to a village in Honduras to provide anesthesia care where access is limited, but the impact is immeasurable.

In these remote communities, healthcare is not always a guarantee. For our students, this mission experience is more than clinical practice: it’s an opportunity to serve with compassion, adaptability, and cultural humility while delivering safe anesthesia care in resource-limited settings.

Medical mission work reminds us that anesthesia extends far beyond the walls of a hospital. It’s about meeting people where they are, advocating for equitable care, and using our knowledge to make a global impact.

We are proud to give our students opportunities that challenge them, inspire them, and remind them why they chose this profession in over anything else. 🌎✈️🇭🇳🩺

Today, our DNAP c/o 2028 began their clinical rotations, proudly wearing branded scrub caps that USC Nurse Anesthesia alumni sponsored for each student. Many chose to write personal notes of encouragement for their students, further solidifying the Gamecock bond that sets us apart. 🤝

Thank you to our passionate graduates for honoring the legacy that has shaped our program and empowering our students to carry it forward. 💪

Best wishes to the Class of 2028 as you begin this next chapter - you have a whole army of support behind you! 🫶

Recognizing Marcus Wilson, DNAP, CRNA: Member of the USC DNAP Class of 2024, currently practicing at Aiken Regional Medical Center. Thank you for all that you do and being so willing to precept SRNAs!

Why did you choose anesthesia?
I decided to go into anesthesia because I love being able to take care of and give all my attention to one patient at a time, as well as the challenge of getting a patient safely through an entire case. The variety of cases performed, depth of knowledge needed, and the number of procedures we get to do makes everyday a different adventure.

What is your favorite part about precepting/teaching SRNAs in the OR or clinical setting?
My favorite part of precepting SRNAs is being able to impart a small piece of knowledge that they may potentially carry with them the rest of their careers. Watching them grow into more confident, capable providers over the course of a month-long rotation is something I really enjoy watching, it never gets old.

Our very own sat down with , a new certified registered nurse anesthetist, to learn his perceptions on starting as a new CRNA. Marvell graduated in May of 2025 and has been working at a large level one trauma facility for the last four months.

Q: Why did you decide to become a CRNA, and what experiences helped you to determine that this field of work was right for you?
M: I had the chance to meet several CRNAs on the unit as they brought their patients over. What really stood out to me was their skill, confidence, understanding of complex cases and patients, and ability to stay calm in the middle of chaos. Later, I had the opportunity to shadow, and I saw the art and individual plans they put together for each patient. After that experience, I knew I wanted to become a CRNA.

Q: What has it been like starting as a new grad in a large trauma 1 facility?
M: It’s been great, challenging,—definitely nerve-wracking at times—but also rewarding all in one! There’s a group of us here that graduated together so there’s a strong sense of support and familiarity since we also trained at this facility. I enjoy the unpredictability of the work, it stretches me, and I know it only will make me a better provider.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about the job that you weren’t expecting?
M: I think in terms of the cases and the people, there hasn’t been anything particularly surprising since we trained here. However, each day is different and I am learning everyday. We have some of the best providers here in my opinion. The learning did not stop at graduation!

Q: What have been some of the most rewarding aspects of working as a CRNA?
M: I think it has been sweet getting home and actually getting to spend time with my family and not think about studying. I still read studies and articles here and there but at my own pace. I have also made a habit of checking in on my patients in PACU/ICU, I have learned a lot from this, and is rewarding when they do well.
