Everyday School of the Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) faculty and staff are making an impact. We are celebrating their work that is co-created with communities, grounded in long‑term partnerships, and responsive to public needs.

SENR had a particularly strong showing among recipients of Ohio State’s 2026 University Outreach and Engagement Awards, a university‑level recognition honoring faculty and programs that exemplify excellence in community‑engaged scholarship.

Dr. Shoshanah Inwood, Associate Professor, received the Community Engaged Scholar Award.

Four of the university’s Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship honorees are closely connected to SENR faculty, staff, students, and partners. A fifth honoree reflects SENR’s interdisciplinary and cross‑college leadership in bringing education to places its least accessible.

The programs who received the Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship award were the Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative (OBCI), Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist (OCVN) Program, Ohio Clean Marinas Program, Ohio Woodland Stewards Program, and Philosophy for Humans (P4H) Learning Community.

Join us in congratulating Ohio Woodland Stewards Program on receiving the Distinguished Multidisciplinary Team Extension Award at the 2026 Ohio State - College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences Awards.

The Ohio Woodland Stewards Program received the Distinguished Multidisciplinary Team Extension Award at the 2026 CFAES Awards. 🏆

With forests covering a third of our state, the work of this program is key to Ohio’s environmental and economic health. About 86% of these woodlands are managed by over 340,000 family forest owners, and the Ohio Woodland Stewards team provides the important education and technical training needed to manage these lands sustainably.

Please join us in celebrating the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program for its outstanding commitment to forest stewardship!

We are hiring a project coordinator!

Ohio will embark on its third statewide breeding bird atlas along with a concurrent winter bird atlas from 2028-2032. This large-scale project, entitled the Ohio Bird Atlas 3 (OBA3), will include a participatory science component that will engage thousands of Ohioans in data collection through a custom eBird portal, as well as multiple concurrent research projects that will collect focused data to augment those collected by Atlas participants.

The project will be supported by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources–Division of Wildlife and coordinated in collaboration with The Ohio State University.

This project coordinator position start date is in August 2026. The coordinator will oversee all day-to-day operations, engage and recruit birders, hire and oversee a small team of seasonal field technicians (approximately 8 ) annually, all to ensure the collection of high-quality data on Ohio’s breeding and wintering birds. We anticipate funding for this position through 2035 to complete the publication of atlas results.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026! We will be featuring a few School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) graduates on our page. If you graduated and want to be featured, please message us!

First up, meet our first graduate: Hannah S. Hannah majored in Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife with a Forestry and Wildlife specialization.

Her post graduation plans are she is currently a naturalist with the Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks, but she wants to travel and hopefully hop around different National Parks and become a wildlife field technician.

When asked about a shoutout/experiences with SENR during her undergrad that stood out, Hannah said: “I loved Avian Biology, Mammalian Biology, and Interpretive speaking! My favorite undergrad experience was getting to help band birds, and the Chicago field trip with Stan Gehrt where we got to help with coyote research! Lastly, I’m so grateful for all the wonderful people I’ve met over the past four years and thankful for the SENR family

Graduate students played a central role in shaping and delivering the annual School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) Research Symposium from start to finish. This year’s event, held on April 24, 2026, welcomed around 30 student presentations across both poster and oral formats, highlighting the incredible breadth of SENR research.

From PFAS and macroinvertebrates to restoration and animal populations, this year’s symposium showcased the diversity, innovation, and dedication of our student researchers.

In the comments below, join us in congratulating the six students who were recognized and received awards for their research at the symposium's award ceremony: Sophia Roberts, Sam Stachler, Hunter Heyden, Kelly Helton, Ryan Donahue (not pictured), and Hunter Slear (not pictured).
