Hosted alongside the Sports and Society Institute, “Running Against History: The Enduring Legacy of Jesse Owens” celebrated the 90th anniversary of Owens’ historic victories at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin.

The event began with a discussion on the historical environment surrounding the 1936 Olympic Games, led by Dr. John Davidson, German historian and Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative.

Following the discussion was a panel featuring Stuart Owens Rankin, Owens’ grandson; Marlene Dortch, Owens’ niece and a graduate of the Moritz College of Law; Butch Reynolds, 1988 Olympic track and field medalist; Kevin Jones, author of "Jesse Owens: A Life in American History" and legendary sports broadcaster Gus Johnson.

The panel explored the impact Owens had on and the world of track and beyond, as well as how his story continues to resonate today.

The event concluded with a reception featuring displays of Owens’ athletic artifacts, including his track shoes and Olympic medals.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped us celebrate the enduring legacy of Jesse Owens!
