Council of Graduate Students (CGS)

Council of Graduate Students (CGS) The Council of Graduate Students (CGS) is the official student government for the 11,000+ graduate students at The Ohio State University.

CGS is the official branch of student government that represents every graduate student at the Ohio State University main and branch campuses. CGS Officers and Delegates serve as staunch advocates during university policy-making decisions. Our competitive funding programs and "graduate-only" social events support the personal and professional development of any graduate students. The University's

most involved and notable students participate in executive level functions of the university by serving as delegates to the Council or as senators to the University Senate. CGS delegates are elected from every graduate program and are responsible for communicating concerns and representing the opinions and interests of their constituents at our monthly meetings. Great delegates serve as key contacts and sources of information for the students within their departments. University Senators are elected from each of 10 academic areas and are responsible for crafting, debating and voting on legislation that governs the University through committees and regular meetings of the Senate. Senators should strive to be aware of the issues affecting their college and to fully understand the impact of policies that are enacted by the Senate. Visit our website: http://go.osu.edu/cgs

Today in University Senate, President Kristina Johnson announced a plan to increase the minimum Graduate Associate stipend by $4,000 by Autumn 2021. This will be a 2-step process with the first increase effective this academic year, and the second increase to be in place for contracts starting Autumn 2021. The university is still finalizing exact implementation details of how the first increase will be administered. Previously the rate was $17,280 annually for a traditional 9-month appointment, and theses increases will raise the minimum stipend to $21,280.

We are grateful for the support of all collaborators including Student Life at Ohio State, Graduate School, Ohio State University, & the Office of Academic Affairs. Thanks to all the advocacy work our students have done, especially the Graduate Compensation and Benefits Committee. We will share more info as available!

In a letter sent to all graduate students at The Ohio State University, the Council of Graduate Students leadership let students know they do not simply “see them,” but that we also hear, understand, and share their frustration, anger, disappointment, and pain.

Institutional equity, inclusion, and diversity can no longer be mere talking points –– they must be backed by action. We can no longer say we champion diversity while remaining silent on issues affecting so many within our community.

We will not stop fighting until the voices, concerns, hardships, and experiences of Black students, faculty, and staff at Ohio State are prioritized by our institution’s leadership and real change is made.

In collaboration with Ohio State University USG and OSU Inter-Professional Council (IPC), we released our statement on the injustices against the Black Community and Columbus Protestors by the Columbus Division of Police.

This is only the beginning of affirming our collective commitment to Black student safety, overall student wellbeing, and community safety in Columbus.
