Congratulations to Kurt Zadnik, FAAO, on receiving the American Academy of Optometry's Life Fellowship Award!

In his acceptance speech, Kurt thanked his family and colleagues, and had the audience laughing along the way. Reflecting on his 30 years as managing editor of Optometry and Vision Science, he said it all flew by.

Dr. Abigail Menner, an Ohio State College of Optometry alumna (Class of 2015) and Associate Professor of Clinical Practice, returned to the College seven years ago because she valued its supportive community and wanted to teach contact lens education. She works in the Contact Lens Clinic alongside fourth-year students, specializing in irregular corneas and fitting patients with specialty lenses like scleral and gas permeable lenses. She finds the greatest joy in restoring patients' vision and watching students gain confidence. Read more about Dr. Menner in this month's Employee Focus.

I felt called toward teaching and decided that the College of Optometry would be a good fit for me as I was excited to work with students, specifically in contact lens education.

This morning at the American Academy of Optometry meeting in Anaheim, the Low Vision Educators Special Interest Group presented Ohio State Optometry's Dr. Roanne Flom with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Flom has devoted her career to providing exceptional care to patients with visual impairments, mentoring countless students, residents, and fellows, and advancing our profession.

Congratulations, Dr. Flom!

Kathy Murphy, OD'82, a Newark, Ohio native with a Miami University zoology degree, built a successful career as owner of Emerald EyeCare LLC in Dublin and is now retired. She credits The Ohio State University College of Optometry for giving her the foundation for that career and the means to retire, and she now gives back (or pays forward, as Coach Woody Hayes would say) through an Endowed Scholarship. Remembered by classmates as "Murph" and as the first female president of the Epsilon Psi Epsilon optometry fraternity, she now enjoys golf and quilting and advises students to stay involved in their communities and never stop learning.

Dr. Kathy Murphy advises OPT-IV students to, "1) Be involved in the community in which you practice, and 2) Never stop learning (seminars, journals, peer groups).

When Ainsley Link shadowed her hometown optometrist as a college junior, the experience opened her eyes to a career she could see herself in and steered her away from a pre-med track. Now a student at Ohio State Optometry, which she chose for its passionate faculty and strong board pass rates, she serves as president-elect of the American Optometric Student Association and fundraising chair-elect of SVOSH. Plus, she is pursuing a master's in vision science under the guidance of her mentor, Dr. Rebecca Deffler! Read more about Ainsley in this month's Student Focus.

I had a great first impression of Ohio State Optometry because they set you up with a support system before you even get to campus. Before first year, they assign you a “Big Sibling” who is a year above you in the program.

Congratulations! Phillip Yuhas, OD, PhD, was awarded $428,878 by the National Eye Institute for a study tilted, “Aqueous Humor Dynamic Components that Determine Intraocular Pressure Variance.”

Glaucoma is the leading cause of permanent blindness in the world, and eye pressure that is high and fluctuates is a critical risk factor. Currently, clinicians cannot predict which patients will exhibit high eye pressures outside of normal business hours, and this gap in knowledge puts patients at risk for vision impairment.

Dr. Yuhas’s study will whether in-office measurements of how fluid flows through the eye and the biomechanical parameters of the eye can predict which patients have high intraocular pressure outside of the office.
