🎉 National Graduate Student Week Spotlight!

Today we’re featuring Aleha Korzen, a Master’s student in the Biology program at Columbus State University whose research dives deep into the ecosystems of the Chattahoochee River 🌿🐟

Working with faculty mentor Dr. Michael Newbrey and partners at Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Aleha’s research focuses on the age and growth characteristics of the Snail Bullhead in tributaries of the Chattahoochee River and how environmental factors influence those patterns.

Before graduate school, Aleha conducted undergraduate research in riparian ecology, studying invasive and native plant species, biodiversity, and water quality relationships in the Columbus area—and even presented her findings at Tower Day.

Outside of research, you can find her spending time with her cats Tipper and Tommy, tending to her garden, or enthusiastically discussing plants, Star Wars, or the works of J.R.R. Tolkien 🌱✨

Stay tuned as we continue celebrating the amazing work and passions of our graduate students all week long!

🎉 Kicking off National Graduate Student Week by celebrating the incredible work of our graduate students!

Meet one of our featured scholars, Amanda Cook, a Biology graduate student specializing in aquatic ecology 🐟🔬. Her research explores blood metrics and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR) in Bluegill to better understand how environmental stressors impact fish health and aquatic ecosystems. Check out her news link: https://www.wrbl.com/news/local-news/lead-copper-fish-impact/

She’s passionate about growing in the field and plans to continue her research through a PhD, further developing as both a scientist and educator.

When she’s not in the lab or focused on research, she finds balance through theater—a creative outlet that’s an important part of who she is—and spending time with her pup, Doctor 🐶.
