WORLD LITERATURE I & ITALY OF DANTE AND BOCCACCIO

Discover a world of literary traditions stretching from Ancient Egypt to Shakespeare’s England, with special emphasis on the literature of Ancient Rome and Medieval and Renaissance Italy. On this literary journey, we will read and discuss the works of famous Italian writers including Virgil, Dante, Boccaccio, Marco Polo, and Petrarch alongside poetry and prose from places as far-flung as Egypt, China, Japan, and the Islamic world. Through exciting excursions to experience ancient Roman ruins and the famous sights of Florence and Padua, we will explore the realms of love, war, and the human spirit in the literatures and cultures of the past. Excursions may include the National Archaeological Museum, San Marco, Santa Maria del Fiore, Palazzo Vecchio, and more. Additional day excursion to Padua. POLITICAL COMMUNICATION AND MACHIAVELLIL: THEN & NOW

Niccolo Marchiavelli is one of western society’s most successful (and infamous) political operatives and thinkers. He also happens to be from Florence, a city home to many major political events over the centuries. His thinking on political philosophy helped shape several aspects of modern politics, including political communication. This course will give students the opportunity to learn a bit about Machiavelli & his philosophy, to examine how his principles are utilized in political communication today, and to explore how his teachings shaped Italian political movements. Excursions within Florence related to Machiavelli.
