"O-H!" 📢

This well-known rally cry was followed by an exuberant "I-O" as Mitchel Sham concluded his speech at The Ohio State University's pre-commencement dinner earlier this month.

Mitchel, a microbiology major with a minor in pharmaceutical sciences, was chosen as the graduating senior to deliver a speech at the exclusive event.

For almost two years, Mitchel has been an integral researcher in the lab of Dr. Jack Yalowich. His work has centered on novel bacterial topoisomerase inhibitors.

Dr. James McAuley, signing off! 🥹

After 33 years of service in academic affairs, teaching, precepting, community building and student success at the College of Pharmacy, Dr. McAuley is officially retired.

His legacy will continue to live through the generations of students he has taught and mentored and the colleagues who have worked alongside him.

Though the college will be losing a great leader, his influential impact will last a lifetime.

In recognition of his service at the college, we invite you to make a gift to the College of Pharmacy General Scholarship Fund in his honor.

We’re fostering a love of both research and teaching! 🤝

For Dr. Brittany Mize '23, the blend of these two interests was met through our academic fellowship program.

Dr. Mize has gained formal mentored teaching experience and unique research opportunities as an academic fellow in our Division of Pharmacy Education and Innovation (PEI).

“A decade ago, opportunities like this weren’t nearly as accessible to postdocs or to individuals with doctoral degrees.”

Dr. Mize will officially complete her fellowship at the end of August, leaving with a sense of preparedness for student-centered teaching.

As we age, our regimen of medications and supplements grows more robust. 💊

For Associate Professor of Practice Dr. Ruth Emptage '93, medication safety for older adults remains top of mind.

While the threat of medication misuse in the aging population continues, we're doing our part to support older adults in understanding their medication.

With tools like the Generation Rx Older Adult Toolkit, we're able to provide safe medication practices to older adults through a fun, trivia-style game.

We also provide outreach programs that address fall risk prevention and medications that increase that risk.

Read more about Dr. Emptage's continued pursuit of medication safety in the latest issue of The Script magazine at https://pharmacy.osu.edu/news/safe-medication-education-offers-major-rewards-older-adults?utm_campaign=phr_marketing-activity_fy26&utm_content=1779720366&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.

Our aging population often manages several chronic conditions at once through a regimen of prescription and non-prescription medications and supplements. But with each additional medication comes an increased chance of an adverse drug event.

We are incredibly honored to have won the practice category in the 2026 inaugural Unite for Impact Challenge! ❤️

The challenge, held by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy - AACP, is a national initiative designed to spark collaboration, innovation and measurable change.

Our winning project, titled "Utilizing Pharmacy Students in a Value-Based Care Model," dives into a unique IPPE rotation made possible by a collaboration with Kroger Health and their centralized services department, Kroger Health Connect.

Additionally, the College of Pharmacy received an honorable mention for its project titled "Country Roads and Urban Streets: Developing a Service-learning Elective Focused on Social Drivers of Health."

This project was a service-learning trip to rural southeast Ohio in October 2025. The trip capped off a seven-week inaugural course that challenged Doctor of Pharmacy students to learn about and design solutions to address health care challenges in rural communities.

“What have you done to build community today?”🫂

This question lives at the end of Dr. James McAuley’s email signature, prompting the recipient to ponder the value of community.

As Dr. McAuley nears retirement at the end of this month, we can't help but reflect on the fellowship he nurtured.

As a steadfast student ally at the college for over 30 years, his roles have spanned teaching, precepting and student success. In his role as associate dean for student success, he has been central to shaping how the college builds community and supports students.

“Since my start in March 1993, I’ve been lucky to collaborate with incredible folks across the college and campus to make sure that our students can be their best selves here.”
