Founded in 1962, the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at Ohio State—home to 90 faculty members among 6 colleges and 26 departments—has become a leading promoter of the university’s efforts to internationalize the curriculum, foster multidisciplinary initiatives, and increase diversity of perspectives. CLAS works to increase the supply of Latin American specialists at all levels of the educational system for service in areas of national need, as identified by the U.S. Department of Education, in government, education, business, and nonprofit sectors. An integral part of its mission is to advance and disseminate knowledge about Latin America among P-12 and postsecondary educators, the business community, media, and the community at large.

The lecture will be moderated by Dr. Ignacio Corona, Associate Professor of Mexican and Latin/o American Cultural and Literary Studies at The Ohio State University.

Eating Rats! A Culinary Tradition in Mexico

Long associated with medicinal properties, the caldo de rata gained renewed attention as some people turned to it as a traditional remedy for COVID-19. Its growing consumption was striking not only because of the circumstances, but because of the animal at its center—one widely perceived as filthy, dangerous, and synonymous with disease. Yet, within this cultural context, the rat was transformed from a creature associated with contamination into an ingredient believed to possess healing properties.

In two weeks: Herbert de Paz's Opening Reception

From September 28 through October 9, 2026, we will host Salvadoran artist Herbert de Paz on campus. De Paz is a pan-Latin American artist who lives and works between El Salvador and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). His work centers on origin and memory, focused on indigenous and Afro-diasporic territories of Central America and Brazil.

Join us on September 30, 2026 at 5 p.m. for an opening reception of Herbert de Paz's exhibit at the Intercultural Gallery at Hagerty Hall.

Light refreshments will be provided. Registration required.
