Phi Mu Alpha: Xi Gamma

Phi Mu Alpha: Xi Gamma The Xi Gamma chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was installed on April 8th, 1988. The Xi Gamma chapter performs various tasks and services for the SSOM.

The Object of this Fraternity shall be for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and a loyalty to the Alma Mater. The chapter has been made up of students from various backgrounds and degrees of study. The students involved in the Xi Gamma chapter have met the GPA requirements for our nat

ional fraternity, went through a probationary period before being accepted to full membership, have been taught the true meaning of being a manly musician, and continually strive to abide by the Object of our Fraternity. The Xi Gamma chapter is grateful for the opportunity to work closely with our home institution - the Schwob School of Music in Columbus, Georgia. The brothers of the Xi Gamma chapter are responsible for half of the ushering and stage-managing duties each semester for the school of music. Brothers are trained by the concert managing team and perform duties on a volunteer basis. Additionally, the Xi Gamma was asked this past year to help with the organization and management of the International Trumpet Guild’s yearly conference as well as the first International Saxophone Symposium and Competition. The brothers were responsible for registration, ushering, stage-managing, and various other tasks given by the directors of the international events. Brothers have also assisted in working the annual Southeast Trombone Symposium as well. Because of the trust that exists between the faculty and staff of the Schwob School of Music and the Xi Gamma chapter, our brothers have the pleasure of helping with important events that allow us to connect with musicians from all around the world to help cultivate our eternal love for the art of music. Xi Gamma has also been involved on a larger level with the downtown campus of Columbus State University. The brothers helped with the Riverpark move in day. Brothers were asked to help move people into the dormitories and give tours of the campus to incoming freshmen and transfer students and to man an orientation booth. Members of the Xi Gamma chapter helped with Project Book bag. The Student Government Association of Columbus State University initiated this project to help provide school supplies to children who otherwise were not able to purchase them. In the greater Columbus community, brothers help with various projects such as Chicken and Rice. Chicken and Rice is a project run by a local church that helps to feed the less fortunate in the Columbus area. Brothers also regularly help with Habitat for Humanity. This activity is generally a chapter tool for helping foster teamwork and brotherhood. In helping with Habitat for Humanity, brothers have helped to build houses in every step of the process, from foundation sculpting, to painting walls and tiling floors. The Xi Gamma chapter continues grow and develop as one of the strongest chapters in Province 33 and in the national fraternity. We always strive to uphold what we say in our Object. We stand for the development of the best and truest fraternal spirit; the mutual welfare and brotherhood of musical students; the advancement of music in America and a loyalty to the Alma Mater.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on Xi Gamma's current secretary, Eric Nicholas Giles! He's currently at University of the South at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival working hard to do what he loves. He was one of the FIVE college Oboe players to be able to attend and is making great music in the orchestral concerts and chamber ensembles he has performed in! Here are some photos to show how exciting it has been!
