Josephinum Diaconate Institute (JDI) Program Manager Karen Steffan, MSN, RN, attended the recent 2026 Pathways for Tomorrow Coordination Program Gathering in Indianapolis. Hosted by The Association of Theological Schools and the In Trust Center, with support from Lilly Endowment Inc., the event brought together nearly 350 leaders from more than 100 theological institutions.

Karen presented the JDI’s Lilly grant-funded project, “A Comprehensive Plan for the Ongoing Formation of Permanent Deacons,” highlighting the success of the JDI's new learning and collaboration platform, Josephinum Connect!

Prayers for the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV!
We are grateful to hear that Pope Leo XIV’s surgery was a success and that he is recovering well from surgery, according to the Holy See Press Office. Please continue to pray for Pope Leo as he recovers.

Pope Leo XIV’s surgery to remove a “small, localized nodule” from his lung was successful and he has returned to his room in the Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office.

Today the priests, faculty, staff, and seminarians of the Pontifical College Josephinum offer their prayers for His Holiness as he undergoes surgery on Tuesday afternoon to remove a "small, localized nodule" from his lung. We invite all people of good will to pray for the Holy Father's care team and his pending surgery. Saint Luke, pray for us!

Architect and Josephinum adjunct professor William Heyer recently presented “Observations on the State of Sacred Architecture 1988-2026” at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. The talk was part of the Catholic Art Institute’s 7th annual conference, “Redeeming Culture: Beauty as a Path to Evangelization.”

Today, October 7, is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Saint Pius V established this feast as "Our Lady of Victory" to give thanks for the Christian victory over the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, a victory attributed to the faithful’s fervent praying of the Rosary.
Pope Gregory XIII changed the name to the "Feast of the Holy Rosary" in 1573. In 1913, Saint Pius X set its date as the 7th of October, now known as the Month of the Rosary.

The 2026 Mud Bowl flag football game yesterday between the College of Cardinals and Theology Papal Bulls was a great afternoon of friendly rivalry! The Theology team took home the victor's trophy with a 14-0 win.

Seminarians Donvito Cortese (Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston), Gills Phillips (Diocese of St Thomas USVI) and Ladouceur Flairssaint (Diocese of Ogdensburg) were admitted to Candidacy for Holy Orders on October 2, by Most Reverend Earl K. Fernandes, Bishop Columbus and Josephinum Vice Chancellor.

During the Rite, each man declares publicly his desire to be bound in Holy Orders. Candidacy also is a reception of that offering by the Church, and a new commitment by the candidate to care for his vocation.
