IUCA+D Salon Talks

Salon Talks are organized to give artists and designers in our community a forum in which to present their work to each other in the effort to generate discussion and debate on the ideas, directions, practices and theories that inform our work, and our lives, as artists and designers. While individuals will be invited to present in this series, there is no application for parti

cipation in a Salon Talk. Anyone may present their work for discussion and is most welcome to do so. They will be scheduled in the first available Thursday convenient to all. Salon Talks are routinely scheduled on alternating Thursdays, and, under special circumstances or for unique opportunities organized weekly. The general public is very welcome to attend and are invited to listen and contribute in our discussion.

Collage as field work. Observation as design method.

Each student in dialogue with a Brazilian artist — Lina Bo Bardi, Cildo Meireles, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Hélio Oiticica, Roberto Burle Marx — using their questions to read the city. To see how public space is inhabited, negotiated, and transformed. To find architecture in the everyday.

Work by Israt Jahan, Ruviëndel Isenia, Carolina Zapata Bustamante, Ana Gaither, Negar Yaghoubpour and Zane Johnson.

Led by Assistant Professor Leticia Pardo .

A look inside Visual Studies Studio 2 with Sam van Strien

Seeing how atmosphere completely changes form.

The cohort started by building physical dioramas, using them as staging grounds to explore light and shadow. By shifting the lighting and experimenting with mediums like charcoal, pastels, and graphite, they translated these 3D models into both representational and abstract drawings.

From the gallery to the source!✨

We’ve encountered Cildo Meireles’ work in exhibitions across São Paulo and Belo Horizonte this month. But the highlight of the Nomadic Studio so far was the privilege of sitting down with the artist himself in Rio de Janeiro.

We got to pick his mind about space, scale, and the senses—context that completely transformed how we experienced his work for the rest of the trip.
Obrigado, Cildo, for your time and generosity. And a huge thank you to Professor Leticia Pardo for orchestrating this experience and connecting the art to the artist.

São Paulo through the lens of Lina. 🇧🇷📐

We spent our first week in Brazil in São Paulo, immersing ourselves in the work of Lina Bo Bardi. It is impossible to understand this city without understanding her vision.

From the suspended gravity of MASP to the “social factory” of SESC Pompeia and the radical transparency of Casa de Vidro, her work teaches us that architecture is not just about form, it is about collective life.

Seeing these spaces in plans is one thing. Walking through them, feeling the concrete, and seeing how the public claims them is another.

Obrigado, São Paulo. Next stop: Rio de Janeiro. ✈️

Architectural Studio 5: Waterworks💧🇦🇺

A look back at the Fall 2025 final reviews, where our M.Arch ‘26 cohort took on the complex urban ecology of Sydney, Australia.

Led by Assistant Professor Yiwen Yuan, the “Waterworks” studio challenged students to reimagine water infrastructure not just as utility, but as civic space. Drawing on Professor Yuan’s expertise in architecture and urbanism in the region, students navigated the tension between the built environment and fluid landscapes at the Alexandra Canal.

Incredible work from a cohort that is ready for their final semester.

On Sunday, we officially kicked off Visual Studies Studio 6: Nomadic Studio in São Paulo. Led by Leticia Pardo, our first stop was the 36ª Bienal de São Paulo to begin our research into “Integrated Practices: Art, Space, and Collective Life.”

We are already deep in the field, looking at how art activates public space in one of the world’s densest cities. The classroom looks different down here.

Here is a look at how we started the week.
