The W's Common Reading Initiative

The W's Common Reading Initiative The Common Reading Initiative (CRI) at MUW draws on our rich literary heritage and builds on The W's tradition of excellence in teaching.

This year The W's Common Reading Initiative (CRI) is Anne Moody's autobiography Coming of Age in Mississippi (1968). The book was selected in part to prompt campus-wide discussion of race, race relations, and the history of integration and civil rights. Next year, beginning in Fall 2016, The W will celebrate a very important moment in its history--the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of the i

nstitution. In the coming weeks and months you will hear more about our plans for the commemoration, but our work to prepare really begins by understanding more about the context of the times. Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi will help us get a feel for what life was like for a young person growing up in Mississippi in the 1950s and 1960s.
