The Office of International Affairs cultivates and nurtures the growth of global perspectives at The Ohio State University. International Affairs oversees the Study Abroad Program, International Student and Scholar Services, five Area Studies Centers and the Global Gateways. The office also sponsors and administers grants, develops international agreements with foreign institutions, supports student scholars and conducts education outreach and special events.

Chris Zirkle, emeritus associate professor in The Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology, has been awarded a 2026–2027 Fulbright U.S. Specialist award to Mauritius. Working with Polytechnics Mauritius, Zirkle will help develop the Certificate in Polytechnics Training and Assessment, strengthening training, assessment and professional development for technical educators.

“I want to create a continuous development framework for assessing and monitoring teacher skills and capabilities for those teaching technical subjects,” Zirkle said.

This marks his fourth Fulbright award and his first through the Fulbright Specialist Program.

For Ohio State student Sloane Warner, studying abroad in Rwanda was a life-changing experience that challenged her academically, personally and professionally.

Through the Genocide and Its Aftermath in Rwanda program, she visited memorials and historical sites and heard firsthand accounts from survivors, rescuers and perpetrators.

Graduate-entry nursing students from The Ohio State University College of Nursing traveled to Northern Ireland for a two-week immersion into one of the world’s most distinctive health systems.

Based at Ulster University’s campuses in Derry~Londonderry and Belfast, students spent their days comparing the United Kingdom’s National Health Service and Northern Ireland’s integrated Health and Social Care model with the U.S. health system they are training to enter.

“This is exactly the kind of experience that shapes a nurse’s entire worldview,” said Dr. Stephen McGhee, director of international educational initiatives. “Watching our students grapple with how a border can either divide health care or, through genuine cooperation, actually strengthen it — that’s a lesson no lecture hall back in Columbus could ever teach. These fourteen students returned home with a far deeper understanding of what population health really means, and I have no doubt it will shape how they practice for the rest of their careers.”

Ohio State architecture students explored Japan’s design culture through “Japan: Fieldwork in Micro-Urbanism,” a new Knowlton School faculty-led study abroad program supported by a partnership with Kindai University. From Tokyo to Osaka, students examined alleys, markets and everyday spaces shaping urban life.

Liz Klein, professor and chair of the Division of Health Behavior and Health Promotion in The Ohio State University College of Public Health, has been awarded a 2026–27 Fulbright U.S. Specialist award to Brazil.

Klein will spend two weeks in October collaborating with the Program in Biological Chemistry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro to help integrate public health content, research translation and policy-relevant science into the curriculum.

“I look forward to sharing ideas on practices to foster more impactful, interdisciplinary, and socially relevant research,” Klein said.

This marks Klein’s second Fulbright award, following her 2021 Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Applied Public Policy at Flinders University in Australia.

Maddie OBrien, Lillian Chesak, Kaden Silva and a new friend share their Buckeye pride at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea while studying abroad this summer at Korea University.

"The most memorable part of my experience at Korea University was taking the train out to Buramsan Mountain with friends I made on the program and getting to watch the sun set over the city," shared Chesak, a communication major.

Civil, environmental and geodetic engineering PhD student Seyhmus Tunc came to Ohio State from Türkiye in August 2025 with an idea of what America might be — but not yet knowing what his life in Columbus would become.

Tunc reflects on how his America has become deeply personal: conducting geotechnical earthquake engineering research, helping undergraduates learn in the classroom and lab, encountering people from many backgrounds and discovering that Columbus now feels like home.

“My America is still a work in progress,” he writes. “Maybe that is what makes it meaningful.”
