Did you know that there have been Masonic ceremonies at the White House?

DID YOU KNOW? There was a Masonic Initiation in the White House? In June 1867, Andrew Johnson became the first president to undergo a masonic initiation at the White House. His executive schedule prevented him from holding the ceremony at the masonic Temple on 9th and F Streets Northwest and the initiation moved to the White House. Benjamin B. French, former commissioner of public buildings and Grand Master of Masons, presided over the initiation.

University Lodge #631 was honored and humbled to be awarded “Best Master Mason Degree” during the 2026 Inspections by the 14th District Officers Association at the District Awards Night.

The Master Mason degree is a significant undertaking for any lodge, requiring a cast of nearly 30 brothers to put on this very moving allegory.

This award truly belongs to the entire membership for stepping up and stepping in to make sure that a Brother was raised to the Sublime Degree in the best possible manner. Thank you to all of the Brothers who contributed to our success!
